Singer and broadcaster Shin Jeong-hwan, who recently shared news that he became a promotional model for a hof, discussed his future activity plans.
On the 3rd, Shin Jeong-hwan told OSEN the behind-the-scenes story of becoming a hof promotional model. The day before, a promotional video for a hof featuring Shin Jeong-hwan was uploaded to social media, and Shin shared it while announcing that he had been chosen as the promotional model.
Shin Jeong-hwan said, "The company president I am close with runs a franchise. I went there and tried the food, and the main menu was so delicious. So I said, 'I want to do (the model).' I thought I might be of some help, so while modeling I took charge of what people commonly call sales and marketing," he explained.
Meanwhile, the company president wrote on social media, "People ask why Shin Jeong-hwan. We answer: originally BulOO doesn't take the ordinary path. An unexpected casting, countless misunderstandings and ups and downs, but the man who ultimately flipped things into laughter and variety. And a man who will keep flipping things. A man who has filmed beyond the floor and into underground tunnels. That intensely spicy life story resembles BulOO's flavor," showing deep trust in Shin Jeong-hwan.
In response, Shin Jeong-hwan said, "I was very grateful that they showed me that (trust). So I want to actively do something," and added, "If it were really unappetizing or lame, I wouldn't feel like publicly promoting it like this, but I was confident. Because it tasted good, I thought, 'I won't get criticized for this,'" he said confidently.
However, in the hof promotional video Shin Jeong-hwan drew attention with a skit that evoked memories of his gambling controversy. In one scene, he tells a YouTuber who says, "I don't even know how to play hwatu," "What do you mean you don't do anything? Stay?" and performs as if throwing cards with money, saying, "Do you have some money? You look like you don't." In another scene, when asked, "Do you accept closed tabs here?" he replies, "Philippines? Why would you say that," and in response to "They say dengue fever kills your appetite," he snaps, "When was dengue fever?" — all captured in the video.
Shin Jeong-hwan was sentenced up to eight months in prison in 2010 on charges of traveling to the Philippines for overseas gambling. At the time he was arrested in the Philippines on gambling charges but was criticized for falsely claiming he was hospitalized at a local hospital with 'dengue fever.' In this context, he used his past controversy in the promotional video, turning it into humor.
On this, Shin Jeong-hwan explained, "The videos weren't the company president's idea; when we filmed at the store, about 30 influencers came. They wrote scripts themselves, and this was one of them. Originally it was a bit more explicit, but I have a child and I said, 'I hope it isn't so blunt,' so we toned it down a lot."
He said, "It's not like I suddenly reappeared after 15 years; those who have been watching know I've had Instagram for a long time and I've continued doing YouTube and such. But those people still have that character and image of me, so they said, 'Just go comfortably,' and filmed. After all, everyone already knows," he said.
The gambling controversy has followed Shin Jeong-hwan like a label for 15 years. Shin Jeong-hwan said with a laugh, "After this year it will be the 16th year, yet they still write the (article) titles like that," but about that image he said frankly, "There's nothing I can do. It's a lifelong scarlet letter, so I don't want to hide it or hate it. These days the trend is to openly show honesty as it is. Hiding it won't work. So we filmed comfortably the way the influencers wanted."
Shin Jeong-hwan, who has attracted attention for his status as a hof promotional model, will return to the public with a new web variety show. Shin Jeong-hwan said, "Before Men on a Mission, I returned by appearing on a program called 'Project S: Devil's talent donation' with Tak Jae-hoon hyung. When entertainers or broadcasters make a comeback, that is a comeback. But people still ask, 'Are you coming back again? Are you crawling out again?' So each time I say, 'I've been back for seven years. But since then, programs or schedules suited to me haven't been arranged, so I've just been around. I'm doing YouTube and other activities,'" he said.
He continued, "This December a subtle start to catching up with 'Nonstop Tak Jae-hoon' will begin on my channel. It's my personal channel and I have about 80,000 or 90,000 subscribers. I had a few personal channels before, but they faded out because they didn't match my tendencies. 'Non Non Non' became too busy for the production company, so we decided to end after season 2," and added, "I have a solo channel called 'Just Shin Jeong-hwan.' Recently it only did live interactions, but starting in December I'll create and upload content to that channel," revealing his new project plan.
He said, "I plan it together. Good production staff like Jae-hoon hyung are attached and we've united in spirit," and added, "It's not the talk-show style that Jae-hoon hyung does. It's with new celebrities and YouTubers, and it will probably be a scene you've never seen before. When you see it later, it will have a set and structure only I can do. Nothing is 100% confirmed yet. The production is 100% confirmed but we're still revising the content structure. It's not me inviting a guest to talk; it's all of us together, but I will be a bit of the center who creates new characters," he hinted about the content.
Reporting that "I think I'm the busiest now" 15 years after the controversy, Shin Jeong-hwan said, "I get many offers from various places, and I'm this busy for the first time. Maybe things are going well; I get business proposals and meetings, and many offers from the broadcast side. Family program offers come in every year. Even now they say let's do a newly planned observational program or family program. Since my comeback, many famous programs have asked to work together, but my family strongly opposed it, so I probably can't do it. (Because they'd have to expose the family) they said, 'We won't do it because of dad,'" he revealed the 'bittersweet' reality.
He added, "Interestingly, I've received many contacts about model proposals, products, broadcast production, and IP production. Next year looks like it will be a bit busier," and said, "These days it's the YouTube era, so since YouTube has some influence, I'll probably continue activities there. If we produce something that truly fits my color and the response is good, I think I'll be more active," forecasting more vigorous activities and raising expectations.<
