"Witjip saramdeul" director Ha Jung-woo responded to the negative public opinion about the film.
On the 2nd, at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, an interview was conducted with Ha Jung-woo, the film's lead actor and director, for the film
The film 'Witjip saramdeul' is a work depicting unpredictable conversations that unfold when two couples, entangled by nightly 'sekdareun' upstairs noise, share a meal for one night, and it is particularly attracting attention as Ha Jung-woo's fourth directorial work following 'Rollercoaster', 'Heo Sam-gwan' and 'Lobby'.
The film is based on the Spanish film "Sentimental," and with its high-intensity lines and provocative dialogue topics, it has been a hot-button issue even before its release.
On this, Ha Jung-woo began by saying, "There was no room for choice. As a director, wasn't that the most correct choice? In terms of the film business side, I think there were parts that should have been considered and compromised. But as a director, there was a pure desire to see it through to the end."
In particular, Ha Jung-woo calmly said that on some online communities there have been negative mentions regarding the R-rated material, "When it's introduced like that in communities, time passes, and once it's released I think it can improve."
He went on, "I didn't simply think of this as a sex comedy. I thought the relationship recovery and drama provided by the original were important. How to achieve the resonance and depth of the drama, the scale itself occurring within one space, the realization and recovery of a couple's emotional awakening — that was the task and challenge of how to carry it to that point. That being said, although the original had parts of that, the goal was to confirm and bring out as much of the comedic and character aspects as possible to complete the drama."
He added, "So, from tomorrow general audiences will be able to see it. This isn't a piece that's just wordplay and back-and-forth banter. It's perhaps something that might make you think — I don't think it's a drama about relationship recovery."
