Lee Byung-hun's mother revealed her "kimchi kimbap" recipe.
On the 2nd, a video titled "BH's nostalgic kimchi kimbap recipe he ate and grew up with. Learned it firsthand at the in-laws' house" was posted on the YouTube channel 'Lee Min-jung MJ'.
On the day, Lee Min-jung revealed director Park Chan-wook's much-praised Lee Byung-hun mother-style "kimchi kimbap" recipe. Lee Byung-hun's mother seasoned the rice with a little salt, plenty of roasted sesame seeds and perilla oil. The mother-in-law, who also seasons aged kimchi and young radish kimchi, said "I use perilla oil in all dishes" and added "as long as the kimchi is tasty."
Kimbap rolling began in earnest. The mother-in-law placed two sheets of gim, then added kimchi, grilled ham, egg strips, and cheddar cheese before rolling. After a kimbap roll was completed in an instant, Lee Min-jung explained, "Rather than seasoning the kimbap strongly with salt and such, we use perilla oil and sesame for a nutty flavor. Ham and cheese already have some seasoning, and the kimchi is seasoned too."
She added a helpful tip, saying, "I used to cut the kimchi. When I cut it, everything came out. My mother-in-law presses it and makes it long. Since you're going to cut the kimbap anyway."
Commenting on the super-simple recipe, the mother-in-law said, "Looking at it this way, you might think it's nothing special. But you need know-how and, honestly, a practiced touch." This time Lee Min-jung rolled the kimbap as she had learned. Watching from the side, the mother-in-law expressed pride, saying, "We now have the know-how and the years, so even without tasting we know how much to put to make it taste good. It's just ingrained in our hands."
Then the production team asked, "How long have you been making this recipe?" and Lee Min-jung said, "If director Park Chan-wook has tried it..." The mother-in-law replied, "I've made it since way back."
