"Even someone like that gets married...". Former baseball player Yang Jun-hyuk, who transformed into a successful businessman with annual sales of 3 billion won, drew fierce criticism on "Sadanggwi" for appearing to neglect his wife.
On the evening of the 30th of last month, one day earlier, KBS 2TV variety show 'Saro blind man's ear is a donkey's ear (abbreviated Sadanggwi)' featured Yang Jun-hyuk as a new boss. He, who was once called 'Yangshin' for his astonishing records during an 18-year playing career, had now succeeded in the yellowtail farming business to the extent that he was called 'Bangshin'.
Operating a farm in Guryongpo, Pohang, Yang Jun-hyuk ran four business sites in front of a farm about 3,000 pyeong—the size of a baseball field—including a fishing spot, a raw fish restaurant, and a cafe. His wife, Park Hyun-seon, who is 19 years his junior, also ran the cafe and lived there with him.
'Sadanggwi' MC Jun Hyun-moo said he has known Yang Jun-hyuk since the earlier KBS 2TV variety show 'Qualifications of Men.' He emphasized Yang Jun-hyuk's consistency and passion, saying, "He was doing aquaculture back when he was on 'Qualifications of Men.'" In fact, Yang Jun-hyuk had been living a relentless routine for the past six months, going to bed at midnight, sleeping only two hours, waking at 2 a.m. to buy juvenile yellowtail and feed fish, and so on.
Perhaps because of his overflowing affection for his work, Yang Jun-hyuk prioritized yellowtail over his wife. He said, "These days, our Lee-jae and the yellowtail are on the same level. My wife is below the yellowtail," drawing rebukes. Even his longtime friend Jun Hyun-moo reacted in shock, saying, "You were like that at the start of your relationship," and adding, "If someone like this gets married...," expressing disbelief.
In addition, Yang Jun-hyuk drew criticism for remarks that seemed to belittle his wife, Park Hyun-seon. Even though Park had prepared separate breakfast rice balls with side dishes and brought them to the middle of Yang's fish farm thinking of his health, he complained, "It's bland," and, "You should bring kimchi too," and when he appeared to make sure the employees who would eat with him were taken care of first, he snapped, "Take care of your husband first."
Panelist Kim Young-hee pointed out, "Do you really have to set up a breakfast there instead of using the raw fish restaurant?" and teased, "If I were there and he said it's bland, I'd probably scoop some yellowtail water next to him." Park Hyun-seon said, "Oppa always eats salty and spicy food, so that's why. Let's adjust a bit and grow old together," soothing the situation, and added, "These days he's obsessed with yellowtail," showing understanding for Yang Jun-hyuk.
Even Park Hyun-seon was disgusted by Yang Jun-hyuk's 'business obsession.' Before succeeding in yellowtail farming, Yang had failed in various businesses such as steak, soy milk, and a screen baseball pub, and even in aquaculture he started with red sea bream and failed with various species before barely succeeding with yellowtail. Yang himself said, "If I had bought a building in Seoul with the money I used for business, I would have earned as much as Seo Jang-hoon."
Nevertheless, Yang Jun-hyuk was still filled with ambition. He had paid 40 million won for a truck for yellowtail farming and 180 million won for a 5-ton water truck. Park Hyun-seon was shocked because she did not know about all these expenditures. She learned of her husband's spending late through employees' revelations while eating breakfast and asked, "Oppa, where does this money keep coming from? There's no money for me," and Yang Jun-hyuk replied, "You earn money from the cafe and spend it," adding to the shock. Jun Hyun-moo again expressed disbelief, saying, "Looking at this guy, he married yellowtail." When Jun Hyun-moo asked, "Are you holding the purse strings while your wife gets a salary?" Yang awkwardly replied, "I give living expenses and a salary together."
Still, Yang Jun-hyuk brightened at the idea, saying, "I want to export overseas a bit, revive Guryongpo into a tourist complex, and make yellowtail steaks and such." Park Hyun-seon said, "Is the wife the one who earns and the wife the one who cleans up?" and Yang Jun-hyuk coldly replied, "What did you do?," repeatedly shocking those watching.
In an interview with the 'Sadanggwi' production team, Park Hyun-seon lamented, "My clothes are thin right now. I came to the cafe opening ceremony on April 26 and haven't been able to go to my parents' home even once. My winter clothes are at my parents' house." Even the staff chimed in, saying, "We should take care of the sister-in-law first," and Park Hyun-seon added, "(Yang Jun-hyuk) starts projects and says, 'Someone will do it.' That someone is me," deepening the sympathy.
In the end, Jun Hyun-moo lamented, "Do you have to be like that to get married?" Kim Young-hee drew a line, saying, "That would only be possible if someone were full of maternal love like Park Hyun-seon." Meanwhile, when his wife asked if he was thinking about a second child, Yang Jun-hyuk added, "I am thinking about it. We should quickly make Lee-jae a sibling."
