Actress Kim Ji-hyun raised the drama's immersion in episodes 3 and 4 of the Coupang Play X Genie TV original series "UDT: Our Neighborhood Special Forces," released on the 24th and 25th, shifting between everyday acting and intense maternal charisma.
The character Jeong Nam-yeon, played by Kim Ji-hyun, is the no-nonsense, resilient "Min-seo's mother" in the neighborhood, the owner of Mamosmart, a character whose quiet yet strong charm stands out in ordinary daily life.
In episodes 3 and 4, Jeong Nam-yeon's storyline unfolded around the shocking incident in which Min-seo's private tutor friend Kim Myung-oh died in an explosion and the backpack bomb incident involving her daughter Min-seo. After the explosion, she shows a determined side by confronting a high school classmate turned National Assembly member Na Eun-jae (played by Lee Bong-ryun) with a blunt remark, and the cheerful everyday life with her husband (played by Heo Jun-seok), who is afraid of Nam-yeon's personality, is depicted.
Later, a tense situation unfolded when CCTV captured Min-seo approaching a suspicious backpack at a bus stop and the anti-terror team and soldiers were dispatched. When the on-site anti-terror team saw Jeong Nam-yeon arrive, they recognized her, calling her "instructor," hinting at a hidden past. Nam-yeon then said, "Move. That's my daughter," opened the backpack to check the bomb, steadied the tearful Min-seo, carefully checked the wiring and calmly removed the fake bomb.
Kim Ji-hyun perfectly elevated the drama's tension by capturing both the character's resolve and maternal emotions. Without exaggeration, she completed the character's emotional outburst with realistic detail, and in the scene where she embraces her daughter and cries, she authentically conveyed maternal love, naturally connecting the temperature shift between everyday life and crisis, lending realism and leaving viewers with an aftertaste.
Meanwhile, "UDT: Our Neighborhood Special Forces" is released every Monday and Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Coupang Play and Genie TV, and is also available on the ENA channel.
