'EXchange / Transit Love4' PD revealed the behind-the-scenes story behind cast member Hyunji's X room crying scene that drew attention.
TVING original variety show 'EXchange / Transit Love4' director Kim In-ha met domestic reporters on the 24th at the CJ ENM Center in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. At the event, he talked about the recently released 'EXchange / Transit Love4', saying it has passed the midpoint and is showing its mid-to-late narrative in 'EXchange / Transit Love4'.
On 'EXchange / Transit Love4', which is currently revealing contestants' past narratives with 'X', the 'X room' drew attention. The way the contestants' past relationships were presented was particularly striking; mobile messenger conversations were printed out in long physical form like a memorial petition. Among them, Hyunji drew attention by crying after seeing a large number of letters exchanged during her relationship with Baekhyun.
Kim In-ha said, "The X room has different advantages when one person enters and when two people enter; when one person enters there is some regret, but I thought it could lead to an emotional release. Each cast member's writer and PD discussed and decorated it with the X room art director, and because they know the contestants' narratives best, they considered how to maximize them and proceeded after consultation. The art director was very proud of the long KakaoTalk printouts."
He continued, "We couldn't show everything on the broadcast, but for example, Hyunji had a very large number of letters. Like many of us, even if you keep letters from past lovers at home, you don't often take them out and reread them. In the X room, those are unfolded so they can be seen with your own eyes and confronted again. I thought there was no other moment to face the letters and messages from a past lover. That seemed to hit the contestants very hard. By recalling the past, the X room became an important space."
"It must have been shocking to see so many messages at a glance," empathized Kim In-ha, adding, "I think the art director wanted to show that the process of breakup is also printed out at length, like such long messages."
About Hyunji's crying, he said with a smile, "I think Hyunji and Baekhyun had a truly epic love," and added, "It seemed like a love that could transcend time. Each person experienced different kinds of love. Not just in terms of time or duration. During the recording Hyunji cried so much that even the production staff watching felt pained."
Furthermore, Kim In-ha drew a firm line regarding reactions that Hyunji's tears recalled 'EXchange / Transit Love2' cast member Sung Hae-eun's tears, saying, "Those are incomparable tears. On the contrary, she cried so much it was worrying. I have never thought of it that way."
'EXchange / Transit Love4' is released every Wednesday at 8 p.m.
