The late Lee Soon-jae's wake was set up that day in room 30 of the Asan Medical Center funeral hall in Pungnap-dong, Songpa District, Seoul. Visitation is expected to be possible from around 1 p.m. The funeral procession is at 6:20 a.m. on the 27th, and the burial site is Eden Paradise in Icheon. The chief mourners listed are his wife Choi Hee-jung and his son and daughter.
The late Lee Soon-jae passed away in the early morning of the 25th at the age of 91.
Born in 1934 in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province, he is officially registered as born in 1935 and was a "living history" who grew up alongside Korea's broadcasting industry and was the oldest actor to remain active until the end. In his seventies he appeared in the sitcom "High Kick!" and in his nineties he took the stage in plays, earning the undivided respect of younger actors with an acting passion that seemed to forget his age. At the same time, he served until recently as a distinguished professor in the Department of Acting Arts at Gachon University, working to train younger actors.
In particular, through KBS2's "Gae-sori" broadcast last year he won his first acting award of his life, delivering another deep impression. At that time he played the role of the "honorary detective" who solved cases with his dog Sophie, showing an unsurprising presence, and he received big applause for his principled acceptance speech that "acting should be judged as acting."
However, for health reasons last October he canceled his performance in the play "Waiting for Godot," which he had been appearing in, and after pausing activities he reappeared at an official event three months later, receiving both concern and support from many people. When he took the stage he was supported by juniors Kim Yong-gun and Choi Soo-jong, and moments such as receiving a trophy directly from the KBS president left a deep aftertaste, as if it were the "final stage of a veteran actor."
