'House On Wheels' Ryu Hye-young showcased impressive Japanese skills.
On the 23rd episode of tvN variety show House on Wheels - Beyond the Ocean: Hokkaido edition, Ryu Hye-young, daughter of Seong Dong-il from Reply 1988, appeared and reunited with Seong Dong-il.
That day the four went to a local recommended restaurant and, after eating, happened to visit a café. The place had been around for 43 years and was full of baseball posters. Seong Dong-il asked, "Does your child play baseball?" and the owner replied, "He doesn't play baseball; it's a meeting of the local support association."
Ryu Hye-young, who was listening nearby, explained to Kim Hee-won and Jang Nara, and when Kim Hee-won expressed admiration she modestly replied, "I can understand when I listen." Jang Nara added, "She's really good. She can read all the Japanese."
Furthermore, Ryu Hye-young not only read the Japanese menu but also flaunted her high-level skills as she ordered a drink. Jang Nara, recalling Kim Jun-han, who is proficient in Japanese, said, "I need to find a way to bring that guy down. Jun-han failed," and watched with interest.
Kim Hee-won asked, "Do you get good at it from watching Japanese dramas?" Ryu Hye-young replied, "Drama, manga (I watched). If you listen carefully, the intonation is distinctive, so I imitate it."
Kim Hee-won said in amazement, "I watched manga too." Hearing this, Jang Nara asked, "Didn't you read it in senior's book?" and Ryu Hye-young delivered a blunt truth that made everyone laugh: "But that's translated into Korean, so how could your skills improve?"
When the ordered drinks arrived, Jang Nara and Ryu Hye-young reacted, "It's cute." Seong Dong-il, sensing a retro vibe, said, "Should I call it an old teahouse or a café? What should I call it?"
Ryu Hye-young explained, "'Kissaten' is the Japanese word for an old teahouse, but these days young people like the retro feeling, so they tour and seek them out." Hearing this, Seong Dong-il said, "Why seek them out? You should stumble upon them like us," and Ryu Hye-young agreed, "That's right."
Seong Dong-il said, "You're trying to take my side no matter what," in gratitude, and Ryu Hye-young expressed affection, saying, "I'm not trying hard; I'm on dad's side."
