Group After School alum and actress Nana subdued a burglar who broke into her home, and the injuries Nana and her mother inflicted on the burglar during the incident were recognized as self-defense.
On the 22nd, Guri Police Station said it plans to transfer a man in his 30s, identified as A, who was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and assault, to the prosecution on the 24th.
Earlier, A is accused of breaking into Nana's house in Acheon-dong, Guri, at about 6 a.m. on the 15th carrying a weapon, threatening and injuring Nana and her mother and demanding money.
He climbed a prepared ladder to the veranda, opened an unlocked door and entered, and after finding Nana's mother inside the house, he is reported to have strangled her and inflicted other injuries.
Hearing her mother's screams, Nana woke up and moved to stop him, and the mother and daughter, after a physical struggle, seized A's arm to prevent him from moving and then reported it to the police.
Police said A had no job and it appeared he was not a stalker fan or targeting a specific celebrity's home. Nana and her mother testified they had no prior acquaintance with A, and A told police he went in thinking no one would be home, that he did not know a celebrity lived there, and that he committed the crime because he lacked living expenses.
According to the police, at the time Nana and her mother fought with A, who had entered the home wielding a weapon, and during that process A was found to have a laceration on his jaw caused by the weapon. This has drawn attention to whether Nana and her mother's actions will be recognized as self-defense.
Police reviewed whether the act fell under justifiable self-defense under Article 21, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Act based on statements from victims and suspects. The provision stipulates that an act to defend one's or another's legal interest against a "current unjust infringement" is valid if there is "reasonable cause."
A police official said, "There was a real infringement on the victims, and it was found that they did not inflict serious injury on the suspect in the process of defending themselves," and added, "After a comprehensive judgment, we determined the victims' actions constituted self-defense and did not file charges."
Also, A filed a detention review on the 18th, two days after his arrest, claiming that the police did not inform him of his Miranda rights during the arrest process, but the court dismissed the request. The detention review request extended the detention period, and the police said they plan to transfer A to the prosecution on the 24th.
Meanwhile, Nana's agency Sublime issued an official statement saying, "Because of the burglar's physical assault, actress Nana's mother lost consciousness due to serious injuries, and actress Nana also suffered physical injuries while escaping the crisis. Both are currently in need of treatment and absolute rest."
