Sibling duo AKMU parts ways beautifully with YG Entertainment after 12 years together and embarks on a new challenge. Behind that decision were the consideration and heartfelt support of chief producer Yang Hyun-suk.
According to YG, about six months ago, chief producer Yang Hyun-suk personally visited the home where AKMU lives and arranged a quiet evening. While eating the food the members had prepared by hand together, various stories were exchanged, from the moment they first met on the 2012 "K-pop Star Season 2," to their debut, and their 12 years of activity.
The core of that gathering was AKMU's concern over whether to continue with YG, with whom they have shared hardships for the past 12 years, or to go independent for a new challenge.
Regarding AKMU's concern, Chief Yang offered honest advice as a senior in the music industry rather than as the head of the agency. According to YG, "Chief Yang encouraged the members, saying that for AKMU, who are agonizing at a crossroads between two choices, leaving YG's nest and trying music activities in a new environment could be a good experience, and he conveyed his sincere intention to support them from behind the scenes," the company said.
AKMU has carved out its musical identity and grown more than anyone, and the group always needed new experiments and attempts. Yang Hyun-suk knew this well, and that is why he chose to push them forward even more.
Amid Yang Hyun-suk's encouragement, AKMU decided on a fresh start after long deliberation. AKMU also expressed deep affection for YG until the moment they left. The two members said, "We are forever the YG family," and expressed their gratitude to Chief Yang, who raised them, with a handwritten letter and a deep bow.
YG said, "It was a great joy for us to be able to watch the sibling duo, full of pure passion, grow step by step," and added, "Like AKMU's sincere hearts, YG's fact that they are family does not change. AKMU, who debuted in 2014 with "200%" and "Give Love," shook the music world upon debut. Their outstanding songwriting and composing abilities, unique sensibility, and lyrical yet flowing musical world soon created the "AKMU genre."
