Joo Hyun-mi revealed the reason she quit being a pharmacist and switched to being a singer.
On the 17th broadcast, Channel A "Best Friend Tokyumentary – Table for Four" (hereinafter Table for Four) featured Joo Hyun-mi, who marked her 40th debut anniversary, and she invited "best friend" Kim Soo-chan and singer-songwriter Kim Beom-ryong.
Joo Hyun-mi said she chose the profession of pharmacist because she was the "K-first daughter" and due to family circumstances. She said she opened a pharmacy in a remote area where there were no hospitals nearby. Joo Hyun-mi said, "My mother had to feed five children. We had no money. I borrowed money, even from a rotating savings pool, to open the pharmacy. I ran the pharmacy as soon as I graduated. I bluntly told customers who demanded antibiotics to not take them recklessly," reflecting on why the pharmacy did not do well.
Joo Hyun-mi said, "We had no money and the cash box was empty. We couldn't buy medicine, so only empty containers were on display. That's why the pharmacy failed. I opened the pharmacy in early 1984, but it didn't even last a year. It failed very quickly. I sometimes have nightmares about those days. Financial matters make people destitute," she said.
After that, Joo Hyun-mi switched to being a singer. She explained the reason, "When I was young I would pathetically follow and sing popular songs. I received vocal training in elementary school. The teacher remembered me and came to the pharmacy. At that time I just wanted to leave the pharmacy. I opened at 6 a.m. and guarded it until midnight, so it was suffocating. I liked the act of escaping the pharmacy."
Joo Hyun-mi said, "I practiced a few times and recorded late at night. I almost forgot about the demo tape. Suddenly I heard my voice on the market street. It was a song exchanged with a man. When I asked, they said it was a hit song, so I bought it with my own money," saying she unintentionally released an album.
Joo Hyun-mi added, "I didn't even receive singing fees. Because it did well, the company gave me 100,000 won and said let's do a second release. Originally senior Jo Mi-mi almost sang it. Recording didn't happen because of the singing fee issue, and I ended up singing it. I think there is fate."
