Actor Song Hye-kyo and Professor Seo Gyeong-deok of Sungshin Women's University released a new multilingual video highlighting the little-known female independence activist Kim Hyang-hwa (1897~?) to mark 'Patriots and Veterans Day.'
On the 17th, Professor Seo said on his social media, "A four-minute video titled 'Crossing the barriers of the era to cry for independence, gisaeng Kim Hyang-hwa' has been released," and noted, "I planned it, and Song Hye-kyo sponsored the production costs." The video was produced in two versions, Korean and English, and is being shared with viewers at home and abroad.
The video centers on the 1919 scene in which Kim Hyang-hwa led a march holding the Taegeukgi with about 30 gisaeng in front of Jahae Clinic at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace.
It also emphasizes that her activity of shouting for independence even in front of the police station became an impetus for the 'gisaeng manse movement' spreading to various parts of the country.
Song Hye-kyo and Professor Seo have consistently produced multilingual content about the lives of relatively overlooked female independence activists such as Jeong Jeong-hwa, Yun Hee-sun, Kim Maria, and Park Cha-jeong. This Kim Hyang-hwa episode is the fifth in the series.
The produced video is rapidly spreading not only on YouTube but also across various social media platforms and overseas Korean communities.
Meanwhile, over the past 14 years the two have steadily continued the 'memory project,' donating Korean-language guides, Hangul signs, and relief artworks of independence activists to 37 independence movement sites around the world.
