Chinese media also conveyed the local mood, saying "this is already the third time the death rumor has been raised." Because prison internal information is not disclosed, rumors tend to spread as if they were "true."
Among Chinese-language netizens, cynical reactions continued, such as "it's a pattern, is the death-rumor factory running again?" and "it seems to keep being consumed because of the shock of falling from star to criminal."
Chris, who debuted in EXO-M in 2013, left the group after filing an exclusive contract lawsuit with SM in 2014 and continued activities as an actor and singer in China.
However, in 2021 the situation changed rapidly when allegations of sexually assaulting a minor exploded. In addition to the first accuser, several victims emerged and the scandal expanded uncontrollably.
Accordingly, on the Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court on on the 2022, he was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group lewdness, totaling 13 years in prison. The appeal was dismissed and the sentence was finalized.

During four years of incarceration, death rumors about Chris have been repeated as many as three times.
