Chris (Wu Yifan), who left the group EXO, has been making headlines amid various controversies. While serving a sentence on charges of sexually assaulting minors, this is already the third death rumor to emerge, drawing attention.
On the 13th (local time), Taiwanese outlet Sanli News reported that rumors are spreading that EXO's former member Chris died in prison while serving his sentence. The outlet said a person claiming to be Chris's cellmate testified to the death rumor.
The testimony in the report about the death rumor was shocking. One claim said Chris died after long-term hunger striking weakened his body, and another alleged he was gang-raped in prison but then killed because he failed to satisfy the gang leader.
There was also a claim that Chris was killed because he was involved with a leader's daughter, which drew attention.
However, Chris's death rumor turned out to be an unverified "rumor." Chinese media, as the rumor spread, said, "Chris's death rumor has been raised three times while he has been serving his sentence. The police have also issued statements denying the rumor."
After abruptly leaving EXO and continuing his activities in China, Chris has been sharing updates amid repeated controversies and rumors.
Chris debuted in 2013 as a member of EXO-M and rose to stardom that same year when the hit 'Growl' made him a big name. But in 2014 he left EXO without permission and suddenly filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment seeking a declaration that his exclusive contract was invalid. The uproar occurred just as EXO was at its peak, and Chris became known among fans as the "icon of betrayal."
Although he left EXO, Chris began activities in China based on the popularity he built through EXO. Starting out as a singer and actor, Chris appeared in multiple films and in 2017 entered Hollywood with Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
But amid active work, controversial behavior continued. Chris became embroiled in allegations of sexually assaulting minors in 2021. According to local reports at the time, Chris forced sexual intercourse on three intoxicated women at his home between November and December 2020, and in July 2018 he allegedly brought two other women to perform obscene acts.
Ultimately, pursuing a solo path, Chris was sentenced in November 2022 by the Chaoyang District People's Court in Beijing to 11 years and 6 months for rape and 1 year and 10 months for group obscenity, receiving a total prison term of 13 years. Having started as a K-pop star and walked a glamorous path with fans' support, the revealed bare truth was utterly shocking.
Chris ultimately ended up serving time with the label "charged with sexually assaulting minors," and his updates have been limited to rumors.
