The superb performances of veteran actors are richly filling "Last Summer" and making the work even more compelling.
KBS 2TV weekend miniseries "Last Summer" (directed by Min Yeon-hong, written by Jeon Yu-ri) has been winning viewers' love with its pleasant and engaging story, and the standout supporting actors who emit vivid presence in the drama's setting, Patan-myeon, are the talk of the town. Their deep performances raise the drama's immersion and infuse energy into the work.
First, Choi Byung-mo, who plays Baek Gi-ho, the reliable aide and father of Baek Do-ha (played by Lee Jae-wook), drew attention by lending weight to Do-ha's plans in the drama. He added viewing pleasure by showing a ideal and believable father-son chemistry with Lee Jae-wook. Also, Jeon Nam-jin, the ex-boyfriend of Song Ha-kyung (played by Choi Seong-eun) portrayed by Ahn Chang-hwan, created tension with a tense clash during his first meeting with Do-ha and rekindled the conflict between Do-ha and Ha-kyung by revealing that Ha-kyung was the one who cut down the ash tree.
In the previous broadcast, the activities of the village head council 'Pavengers,' the key figures leading Patan-myeon, stood out above all. The distinctive village head characters played by Kim Ki-chun, Jeong Gyu-soo, Park Sang-myeon, Jo Hee-bong and Lee Dong-yong depicted the pleasant and friendly daily life of Patan-myeon. The five village heads opposed the project to remodel the closed Patan High School into an observatory, but changed their minds after Do-ha offered dugaekju (alcohol made from azaleas). Later, after village head Go (played by Kim Ki-chun) declared he would decide whether to approve the observatory by playing yut, the scene in which Do-ha, Ha-kyung and the five village heads engaged in a yut game drew warm smiles from viewers.
Lee Soo-mi, who played the women's association president who is more active in village affairs than anyone else, also played an indispensable spice role. The women's association president volunteered to be the referee in the yut game held to decide whether to approve the observatory and helped ensure the smooth progress of the game among Do-ha, Ha-kyung and the five village heads. In particular, the president hinted to Ha-kyung that it was thanks to Do-ha that the village could hold events despite the flood, which provided an opportunity for Ha-kyung to soften her sharp feelings toward Do-ha and improve their relationship.
In this way, "Last Summer" centers on the solid narratives and romance of the lead actors while raising the drama's completeness through the performances of superb supporting actors represented by the people of Patan-myeon. Their outstanding and distinctive acting added vitality to the work and served as a key element that brought joy to viewers. As a result, viewers' anticipation is growing for how "Last Summer" will unfold going forward.
