Ha Seung-ri was swept into the whirlpool of fate.
On the 12th, in episode 23 of the KBS 1TV daily drama Marie and Her Three Daddies (directed by Seo Yong-soo, written by Kim Hong-joo), Kang Mari (played by Ha Seung-ri) took an interview with the sperm center research team at Um Hospital without knowing that her father Kang Min-bo (played by Hwang Dong-joo) might become a test subject.
Ju Si-ra (played by Park Eun-hye) and Yoon Un-kyung (played by Jo Hyang-gi) fought over the repair costs for the back room of Mari's house. That was because Um Gi-boon (played by Jeong Ae-ri), Si-ra's great-aunt and Un-kyung's mother, had agreed to pay the large repair bill. Un-kyung was convinced that Si-ra was exploiting Gi-boon's weakness. Si-ra snapped at Un-kyung, saying, "If you're stingy about the actual construction cost, make this house your house and then we'll talk," and Un-kyung replied, "I'll make it my house by any means necessary, so we'll see then." The relationship between the two, friends and relatives, grew more strained, foreshadowing the intense confrontation to come.
Lee Kang-se (played by Hyun-woo), who visited Mari's house worried about her illness, happened upon Si-ra and Un-kyung's quarrel. He warmly embraced Mari when she rushed out after belatedly seeing his message. But Min-bo soon appeared, and Mari and Kang-se hurriedly left. Mari revealed to Kang-se that Min-bo was her father and promised to introduce him properly later.
Later, Mari, who went to interview with the sperm center research team, encountered Professor Lee Poong-joo (played by Ryu Jin), who was in charge. Mari spoke of a friend's father who had azoospermia and said, "I wondered if a man with azoospermia could never be a father, and I wanted to learn about it." The possibility that Min-bo might become a test subject deepened curiosity about Mari's fate.
Meanwhile, Gi-boon targeted Si-ra to win over Min-bo's heart. Gi-boon asked Si-ra to persuade Min-bo, saying, "Mr. Kang is a very rare case and someone our research needs." But Si-ra refused, saying, "Secrets begin to spread from the eye of the needle," and countered with the question, "Who is Mari's real father?" Gi-boon evaded, saying, "Don't try to find out. I don't know either," and the conflict between Si-ra and Gi-boon over Mari's birth surfaced.
Si-ra, hearing Gi-boon's desperate plea, could not hold back her tears. The tears were a complex mix of remorse for the artificial insemination decision she made in the past, fear that Mari would learn the truth, and regret toward her unsuspecting daughter. At that moment, Poong-joo entered the elevator Si-ra was in, and the scene of him seeing Si-ra break down in tears served as the ending, raising expectations for the tumultuous developments to follow.
