The list of nominees for the 2026 Grammy Awards was announced, prompting both cheers and sighs from music fans around the world.
The Grammy nominee announcement released on the 7th local time included big-name artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny and Sabrina Carpenter. But on the other hand, pop queen Lorde and The Weeknd were shockingly left out entirely. The Daily Mail analyzed the nominees on the 8th (local time).
Lorde, The Weeknd again "Grammy zero"…fans "don't understand"
Despite receiving praise and reaching No. 1 on the charts with her fourth full-length album "Virgin," Lorde did not receive a nomination in a single institutional sector. She was previously nominated for album of the year in 2018 for "Melodrama," but the Grammys drew controversy at the time for unequal treatment after only male artists were given performance opportunities.
The Weeknd was also completely excluded even with his new album "Hurry Up Tomorrow." Even though four years have passed since he boycotted the Grammys calling them "corrupt," the uncomfortable relationship with the academy seems to remain.
This year Taylor Swift and Beyoncé absent "excluded due to release timing"
To quell fans' questions, the organizers said, "Taylor Swift and Beyoncé did not release new records between Aug. 31, 2024, and Aug. 30, 2025, so they were not eligible for nomination."
Surprising dark horses…Timothée Chalamet to Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Jackson
The most unexpected name was Kylie Jenner's boyfriend, actor Timothée Chalamet. He received his first Grammy nomination for a song he sang himself on the soundtrack of the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown." Also, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson drew attention by being nominated in the best audiobook/storytelling institutional sector for narrating her memoir "Lovely One" as an audiobook.
K-pop also makes its presence felt: HUNTR/X of "KPop Demon Hunters" nominated in 2 institutional sectors
HUNTR/X (Lee Jae, Audrey Nuna, Ray AMI), who sang the soundtrack "Golden" for the Netflix animation "KPop Demon Hunters," were nominated in two institutional sectors: best pop duo/group performance and song of the year. Fans cheered, saying, "It proved the global status of Korean artists once again."
Disappointing misses for newcomers…Miley, Reneé Rapp only "one or zero"
Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus, noted for her dazzling performances, was limited to a single institutional sector nomination (best pop vocal album) for "Something Beautiful," and Broadway alum Reneé Rapp also disappointed fans by missing out on the new artist award.
Hayley Williams earns first solo honor
Finally, Hayley Williams, formerly of the rock band Paramore, received recognition for her solo work with four institutional sector nominations for her solo album "Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party."
The 2026 Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 1 (local time) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount Plus.
