The sequel to the masterpiece Avatar, which has held the No. 1 spot on the all-time worldwide box office ranking for 16 years and drew over 20 million viewers domestically, Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes, has confirmed a world premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 17, and released launch stills.
Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes, one of the most anticipated films of this year-end, is finally confirmed to open first in the world in Korea on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes is the third installment in the Avatar series, which tells a story of an even greater crisis unfolding on a Pandora covered in fire and ash after the death of Jake and Neytiri's first son, Neteyam, when the ash tribe led by Varang appears before the grieving Sully family. The original Avatar drew 13.33 million domestic viewers and became a global hit.
This installment will heighten interest by introducing a Pandora covered in fire and ash never seen before and new Na'vi tribes, a departure from the previously refreshing mood. It will also feature wondrous new lifeforms, promising rich entertainment. Unlike the previous film that depicted a conflict between humans and the Na'vi, this film hints at a new story and scale depicting conflict between Na'vi and Na'vi, further raising expectations.
The launch stills released with the news of the world premiere overwhelm viewers with the intense expressions of the strong Na'vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and Varang (Una Chaplin), the leader of the ash tribe who has lost her home due to volcanic activity and harbors anger toward the planet Pandora. In particular, Neytiri's expression, which mixes grief over the loss of her son, a sense of responsibility to protect the remaining family members, and anger toward the enemy, piques curiosity about the Sully family's complex journey in this film. With the announced clash between the Sully family, who seek to protect Pandora and their tribe, and Varang, who wants to spread her influence alongside Colonel Quaritch, the enlarged threat and scale-defying action will make fans and general audiences' hearts race.
Avatar, released in 2009, caused a sensation with its innovative technology, drew 13.33 million domestic viewers, and earned global box office revenue of $2.92371 billion (about 4.0551 trillion won), holding the No. 1 spot on the all-time worldwide box office ranking for 16 years. The second story in 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water, drew 10.8 million domestic viewers and earned global box office revenue of $2.32025 billion (about 3.2181 trillion won), placing third on the all-time worldwide box office ranking. And finally, the third story will reach movie fans around the world in 2025.
Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes will present an even newer and more diverse Avatar universe with director James Cameron, who brings to life worlds beyond imagination, delivering a story about the Sully family facing a completely different crisis from the previous film, the ash tribe appearing for the first time in the series, the unseen side of Pandora, intensified visual spectacles, and unprecedented large-scale battles.
Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet, actors who were beloved in the previous series, will reprise their roles, and Una Chaplin and David Dastmalchian will appear as new characters in this film, expected to showcase unique presences. Once again provoking a global sensation, the masterpiece Avatar: The Fire and the Ashes is scheduled for its world premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
