Earlier, Kim Hee-ra had announced her battle with breast cancer. She surprised viewers with a much healthier appearance than before. Kim Hee-ra said, "I could no longer work as an actress because of the side effects of chemotherapy," and "I came to Vietnam with a desperate heart."
Now in her fifth year as a guide, he added, "Broadcasting opportunities in Korea decreased, making it difficult to make a living, so I had no choice but to find new work. But now I feel a sense of fulfillment here."
Kim Hee-ra appeared in about 1,800 works including "Dae Jang Geum" and "Imsan," and was loved as a "premium supporting actress." However, he said, "Because I worked so hard, my face became common and I couldn't show a variety of roles. At some point I had nowhere to stand," and added, "I left because I hated that. I wanted to solve it myself."
Cruelly, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2020, and then underwent 18 rounds of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments. Kim Hee-ra recalled the painful time, saying, "While showering I found a lump in my right breast and went to the hospital just in case; it was late stage 2 breast cancer," and "I received chemotherapy once every three weeks, and even after one injection I would vomit and be unable to stand."
After a long five-year battle, Kim Hee-ra was eventually declared fully recovered. She calmly said, "After being sick I learned what is more important than money, fame and success. Living doing what I want is the best," and "I couldn't collapse just because I had no family. So I stood up again in Vietnam."
Kim Hee-ra still goes back and forth between Korea and Vietnam working as a tour guide and focuses on managing her health. She said, "The doctor said to prevent cancer recurrence I must manage chronic inflammation well. So I exercise and changed my diet," and said, "When you're sick, money, fame and success don't matter; doing what you want is the best."
Previously, in 2021 and 2022 she had said on broadcasts, "I am now almost fully recovered and have no aftereffects." She added, "Getting cancer was a signal to reexamine my life habits. Now I live with gratitude instead of regret."
Opening the second act of her life after her illness, Kim Hee-ra said, "I am finally learning how to live for the real me," and left a strong impression with her pledge, "I will continue to live healthily and true to myself." Support poured in for Kim Hee-ra, who is living busily going back and forth between Korea and Vietnam while juggling treatment and work.
