'Singer Kim Jong-kook delivered a heartfelt confession and a deep resolve on the concert stage marking his 30th anniversary since debut.
After holding a private wedding last September, Kim Jong-kook, appearing before fans for the first time, said, "I am truly grateful to be holding a 30th anniversary concert right after getting married," and reflected, "This stage feels like another beginning in my life." Fans cheered, "Congratulations on both the marriage and the 30th anniversary, Kim Jong-kook, fighting!" as they supported his new start.
On Friday, Sept. 5, Kim Jong-kook quietly held a wedding in a location in Seoul with only family and close acquaintances invited. Afterwards he told fans, "I am someone who gives the gift of memories," and said, "Even if I am not actively promoting music, I hope my songs remain a piece of your lives." This 30th anniversary concert was also planned around that promise, presented in a documentary format covering from his early audition days to difficult times. Kim Jong-kook said, "I wanted to show the fans who have been with me from the beginning through now the journey as it was."
On stage he said, "Since debuting in 1995 a lot has happened, but I am above all grateful that we can laugh and sing together like this," and added sincerely, "Because you were there, I could come this far." He went on, "I will continue to sing steadily and sincerely. I hope my connection with you lasts a long time."
In particular, that day Kim Jong-kook reflected on the years and experiences and left a meaningful message. "Living as an entertainer for 30 years, I have gone through many personal ups and downs. I always tell myself, 'I shouldn't do things like this,' and try to be careful, but there are times I unintentionally disappoint someone. In life you can miss small gaps or unexpected parts. But all those things are lessons and study for me. I will live more humbly and work harder going forward."
He continued, "I sincerely thank everyone who spent money and precious time to come here today," and said, "Even if I cannot become an outstanding entertainer, I will strive to remain a decent person. I will do my best to be remembered by you as a good memory," earning loud applause from the audience.
Meanwhile, some fans and the public responded that his message, quietly reflecting on himself and speaking sincerely amid the interest and misunderstandings following his 'private wedding,' "was introspection rather than showiness." Kim Jong-kook's 30th anniversary stage became more than a simple commemorative performance; it was a stage to share an artist's and a person's growth, gratitude and the start of a new life.
