Actor Jang Seung-jo shared his thoughts on playing a powerful villain.
On the 5th at the Yongsan CGV in Seoul, a production press conference was held for the Netflix series As You Stood By. Director Lee Jeong-rim, Jeon So-ni, Lee Yoo-mi, Jang Seung-jo and Lee Moo-saeng attended the event.
As You Stood By tells the story of two women who decide to commit murder in the face of a reality from which they cannot escape unless they die or kill, and become entangled in an unexpected incident.
Jang Seung-jo, who plays the roles of "No Jin-pyo" and "Jang Gang," introduced the characters: "No Jin-pyo is Hui-su's husband. Socially he is a capable and successful figure, but at home he is a person who is obsessive and violent toward Hui-su. Jang Gang is an innocent young employee who is favored under President Jin So-baek."
Taking on a violent, powerful villain, he joked about the global reaction, saying, "I'm also a little afraid," and confessed, "Portraying a violent person. Earlier, when I read the book, I wanted to save the two protagonists. That feeling came before the burden of having to portray a violent person."
He continued, "But portraying that character was necessary to show the tension the drama had, so I think I could take it on with some ambition," expressing his conviction.
In particular, Jang Seung-jo said, "What I find really strange is that there was a time when I was reading the script. While looking at Jin-pyo then, I happened to check the stress index on my smartwatch, and it remained close to 100. The next day, and other days when I checked, the stress index kept being high," and added, "I'm sorry I couldn't spit on the script (like Lee Kwang-soo in The Manipulated)," prompting laughter.
