With Paris Gold Hands, Son Tail, and O Dolce Vita rising to the top three of 'Just Makeup,' the final mission transformed veteran actors Kim Young-ok, Ban Hyo-jung and Jung Hye-sun into models.
The final top three of Coupang Play original variety show Just Makeup, released on the 31st, was confirmed.
On that day, following last week, the final winner of the second mission 'Kamadenu' was revealed, and the victory went to Son Tail. Judge Seo Ok said, (Son Tail) 'literally had insane detail,' and Lee Sa-bae marvelled, 'It looked like fine art. It seems crazy.' Jungsaemmool also acknowledged, 'It was very creative.' Lee Sa-bae said, 'It was so cool. I could feel Son Tail's new side and how much she loved that work.'
In the judges' comments, Lee Sa-bae predicted, 'How difficult this skill is — if each hair is applied even slightly too thick, it won't work. Then she probably used several brushes.' Lee Sa-bae praised, 'It's the ability to use various tools, you have to control the amount of paint you apply well, and you need technique to continuously control the brush. It's such an extremely delicate task that I think we should appreciate it.'
Son Tail, selected as the second finalist, said, 'I felt both pressure and great joy. After receiving this theme, I couldn't even eat well, I think. I kept practicing, and every time I upgraded I felt tremendous euphoria, and on the other hand, thank you for awakening this passion in me again,' she said.
The next mission to choose the final contestant was 'novel.' Participants had to express the description of a mermaid appearing in Cha In-pyo's book Ino Sanyang with makeup. Accordingly, Cha In-pyo appeared as a judge for this makeup mission and received cheers from the cast. Lee Hyori introduced, 'The author's work Ino Sanyang has been well received in Korea's literary world and is also drawing attention overseas.' Cha In-pyo explained, 'At Istanbul University in Türkiye, third- and fourth-year Korean literature students use it as a textbook, and it is being translated into Chinese.'
Among them, participants expressed mermaids through makeup, and Cha In-pyo said, 'Mother mermaids in my novel live only in the deep sea, the abyssal ocean. Because there's no light, the mermaid I imagined is like an oriental painting in terms of imagery, monochrome, or evoked a kind of jellyfish-like transparency.' After seeing the mermaid images the cast drew themselves, Cha In-pyo said, 'Seeing what I expressed in writing being directly embodied as images by the makeup artists makes my heart flutter. It feels like seeing a mermaid from a fairy tale.'
The winner of the final top three contest 'novel' was O Dolce Vita. Seo Ok said, 'Everything was great — emotion and skill didn't fall short,' and Lee Sa-bae said, 'It was perfect, beautiful, and you reinterpreted the story. Considering the overall completeness, you should go to the final.'
In his judging remarks, Seo Ok said, 'The new face we thought of most highly. From the moment she appeared in a black dress I was surprised. She said she would break away from what we ordinarily think.' Lee Jin-su said, 'Among the eight mermaids, she stood alone apart,' and Lee Sa-bae said, 'That darkness wasn't a darkness meant to stylishly decorate the look; it came from fully understanding and empathizing with the work Ino Sanyang, so it drew me in.'
Lee Sa-bae said, 'Skill-wise, it's not just a black line and smoky eye. It's meticulous. There's no smudging anywhere and it was perfectly executed,' and Seo Ok said, 'The eyeliner area implemented a truly perfect proportion that suited the model, and the overall makeup balanced very well with the model's face.' O Dolce Vita said, 'Honestly I didn't expect this, I thought that mermaid would be the last and that I would try to show something more like myself at the end, but thank you for recognizing it,' and shared her feelings about making the top three.
With the final top three decided, judge Cha In-pyo said, 'It was truly an honor to be part of such a wonderful event. Each of you is a professional makeup artist. Even so, the courage to participate in a survival competition where professionals compete with each other is truly remarkable,' and he applauded.
Cha In-pyo added, 'If someone told me to participate in a survival contest where professional actors gather to compete, I don't think I could do it. Just by participating and taking on the challenge, I consider each of you winners. I think your value has already been proven by the process, not the result. I will support you all,' he said about his participation.
The final top three — Paris Gold Hands, Son Tail, and O Dolce Vita — moved to the mission location, and along the way brushes with the names of the eliminated contestants were placed. Son Tail lamented, 'I could have been in that place too. Passing by there was emotionally complex.'
Paris Gold Hands said, 'I didn't expect to get this far. The die has already been cast, so let's do our best so I'm not ashamed. That will do,' expressing determination. O Dolce Vita said, 'I was at a time when I just wanted to do makeup. I'll do makeup to death and enjoy it,' mentioning her mindset going into the final.
Lee Hyori asked Paris Gold Hands, 'Which of the three do you think will win?' Paris Gold Hands candidly replied, 'Now that I'm this far, I want to win.' Lee Hyori empathized, 'That's right. Honest feelings are good. You came from Paris,' she said. When Paris Gold Hands said, 'I want to try a business class at least once,' Lee Hyori encouraged, 'Win and take first class home.'
Asked the same question, Son Tail said, 'I hope it's me. Having come this far, now that I'm here I feel greedy,' and O Dolce Vita said, 'I can't lose. I originally didn't expect anything, but hearing from the side I can't lose.'
The final mission revealed to them was DREAMS, a mission to complete a photo spread featuring special models that capture their dreams. The winning photo spread will grace the cover of the world's first fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar in the December issue. Son Tail said, 'I'm more eager for the cover than the prize money. I thought it was very meaningful that this would remain in the media, not just a contest,' and O Dolce Vita confessed, 'I'm very excited. I thought this could create another record.'
The final mission models were also revealed: the first model was actor Kim Young-ok. The second model was actor Ban Hyo-jung, and the third was actor Jung Hye-sun. The mission's theme was to complete a photo spread starring senior actors. Lee Hyori explained, 'All three of these people are still dreaming new dreams about acting even though they are over eighty. You should express the characters these three actors dream of as actors through makeup and complete a special photo spread.'
As a result of model selection, Son Tail was paired with Kim Young-ok, Paris Gold Hands with Ban Hyo-jung, and O Dolce Vita with Jung Hye-sun. After meeting the models in person, the three selected items according to the actors' desired themes: Paris Gold Hands chose 'grim reaper,' Son Tail chose 'Queen Elizabeth,' and O Dolce Vita chose 'action actor' as the themes for the final mission.
