Singer Ahn Chi-hwan's battle with colon cancer has been spotlighted again.
On Oct. 31, the KBS Joy entertainment program "20th Century Hit Song" (abbreviated Hit Song) aired a chart show under the theme "singing again! singers who overcame pain." Among them, Ahn Chi-hwan drew attention by ranking eighth.
Ahn Chi-hwan is a singer who once received great love for his hit song "People Are More Beautiful Than Flowers." During a health checkup in 2014 he was found to have cancer cells in his colon and underwent surgery. It turned out he was at stage 3 colon cancer at the time.
He then underwent six weeks of radiation, 12 rounds of chemotherapy and two surgeries over the course of a year as he fought to recover. As a result, he suffered so much that he lost as much as 15kg in weight.
Even while battling the disease, Ahn Chi-hwan said he still felt like a entertainer and found meaning in being able to write songs in unfamiliar circumstances. When his condition was good he even recorded, and he included a song expressing his will to fight the illness titled "I am a cancer patient" on his 11th album.
Fortunately, his efforts to recover paid off and he is now healthy enough to appear on stage. He also drew applause after being declared cancer-free five years later.
