The musical "Mrs. Doubtfire" offers the fun of choosing among three different Daniel/Doubtfire portrayals by Hwang Jung-min, Jung Sung-hwa and Jung Sang-hoon. Among them, the youngest, Jung Sang-hoon, is the optimal casting who combines Hwang Jung-min's freshness and Jung Sung-hwa's familiarity.
The musical "Mrs. Doubtfire," which opened on the 27th of last month, is an adaptation of the film of the same name that starred top Hollywood actor Robin Williams. It warmly and poignantly depicts the story of father Daniel, who, after his divorce and separation from his children, disguises himself as nanny Doubtfire to get back close to his family.
Jung Sang-hoon newly joined this season, returning after three years alongside Hwang Jung-min. The only veteran is Jung Sung-hwa. But he freely showcases the depth he built over many years across screen and stage in "Mrs. Doubtfire." His comedy, honed for a long time on SNL Korea, shines on stage.
Jung Sang-hoon, who plays the dual roles of Daniel and Doubtfire, excellently handles the show's key elements: 20 quick changes, cross-dressing performance, as well as tap dance, rap, puppetry and loop machine. Being the youngest and lightest among the three Daniels, he completes a dynamic, energetic character who flies across the stage.
Above all, because he is the most specialized in comic acting among the three, he keeps the audience laughing nonstop from start to finish. Thanks to Jung Sang-hoon's effortless charm that breaks down the boundary between direction and ad-lib, viewers burst into laughter throughout the 175 minutes.
Audience members are highly satisfied with Jung Sang-hoon's unique dual-role vocal variations and wide range. During intermission, the audience in the seats kept exclaiming "It's fun," "It's funny," and "He's so good," and real viewers' reviews were full of praise.
At an earlier press call, Jung Sang-hoon said, "The two senior actors were so good during rehearsals that I learned a lot while making it my own. Veteran actor Jung Sung-hwa guided me well. He straightened out a long detour into a straight path. I was lost a lot, but my senior organized the blocking for me, which was good. Hwang Jung-min has good ideas. I gained a lot thanks to the two of them."
In response, Hwang Jung-min praised him with a laugh, "Actually, the production team wanted a body like his the most. If someone bulky like me or Jung Sung-hwa wears the Doubtfire makeup, it can look off, but Jung Sang-hoon is so pretty." Jung Sung-hwa also praised Jung Sang-hoon's style of acting, saying he emits a different energy from the original cast members.
Jung Sang-hoon, who deliberately makes people laugh and delivers unexpected emotion in "Mrs. Doubtfire," will welcome audiences at the country's first theater dedicated to musicals, the Charlotte Theater, through Dec. 7.
