Actor Bae Hyun-seong expressed his impressions of working as a duo with Han Seok-gyu.
Recently, at a cafe in Gangnam District, Seoul, a wrap-up interview was held with actor Bae Hyun-seong, who played Jo Philip in the tvN Monday-Tuesday drama 'Shin's Project.'
'Shin's Project' is a dispute-resolution hero drama in which the mysterious chairman Shin (played by Han Seok-gyu) solves cases and achieves justice by crossing the line between illegal and legal methods. In the work, Bae Hyun-seong played Jo Philip, a rookie judge and an employee at the chairman's fried chicken shop, forming a duo performance with Han Seok-gyu.
When asked about his feelings working with Han Seok-gyu, Bae Hyun-seong opened up, "One of the reasons I took this project was because of senior. He was the first to be cast, and when he said he would do it, I really wanted to do it."
He said, "While preparing for the project, we met two or three times a week for about three or four months to do readings with the director, senior, and other actors. We talked for about four to five hours a day and even had time to eat together. In that process, senior gave a lot of great advice and we matched lines a lot, so many awkward or difficult parts disappeared. When filming started, there was no time for awkwardness; as soon as we began our chemistry was good and things went well. While acting, senior generously gave good words and praise like 'It's good to always think about the whole situation' and 'It's good to listen carefully to the other person's lines,' so it wasn't hard and I was happy during filming."
When asked what praise he heard from Han Seok-gyu, he shyly said, "It's a bit awkward for me to say the praise I received myself, but he praised me saying, 'Hyun-seong, you have good fundamentals and your projection and pronunciation are good, so never lose your initial passion and work hard.' When there were well-done scenes he would say, 'That was good just now,' and 'Well done.'"
He said, "Of course, I appreciate the acting praise viewers give after watching the drama and the compliments I hear from friends and acquaintances, but when I'm filming with senior, we act face to face. Hearing praise from someone who is closest in the process of matching chemistry felt so good. Every time I heard 'You're doing well, so keep working hard,' I thought, 'If senior says it to my face, I must be doing well,' and felt relieved."
In the work, Jo Philip also showed growth as a negotiator while watching the chairman. When asked whether he actually grew as an actor by observing Han Seok-gyu, Bae Hyun-seong said, "I don't personally feel that I have grown much in acting. But when I listen to what people around me say, I do feel that I have grown another step this time," adding, "Working with senior, I saw a cool senior and a great adult, and it made me want to become that kind of person in the future."
When asked whether there was any difference between the imagined and real Han Seok-gyu, he explained, "The feeling I had when I thought of senior and the feeling when I first met him were the same. He is gentle and takes good care of people. Every time we meet he asks, 'Have you eaten?', 'What did you eat?', 'Have you been well?' The impressions I felt from watching the drama and other videos were exactly the same image," he explained. (Interview part 2 to follow.)<
