Late actress Kim Sumi marked the first anniversary of her passing.
Late Kim Sumi died on Oct. 25 last year from hyperglycemic shock. She was 75 at the time.
Kim Sumi, who debuted in 1970 as part of MBC's third open recruitment of actors, played the role of Ilyong's mother in the drama "Jeonwon Ilgi." Riding that momentum, she won the grand prize at the 1986 MBC Drama Awards, becoming the first supporting-character actor to receive the acting grand prize and was loved as a national actress.
In addition, she received warm affection for her foul-mouthed grandmother characters in the sitcom "Annyeong, Francesca" and films such as "Love Is Scary," "Glory of the Family," "Barefoot Kibong," and "Hell Money," offering a sense of familiarity and warmth.
Her final works included the musical "Mother's Home" and the film "Thunderstruck Cop." Actor Shin Hyun-joon, who worked with the late actress on many projects during her lifetime, shed tears at the press screening for "Thunderstruck Cop" and others upon hearing the news of Kim Sumi's death, whom he regarded like a mother.
The late actress was also popular in life for her outstanding cooking skills. Riding that popularity, she was active on cooking variety shows such as "Are You Eating?" and "Sumi's Side Dishes." She succeeded in commercializing soy-marinated crab and kimchi that captured her distinctive touch, achieving success as a businesswoman.
Kim Sumi was also loved as part of an "actor family," having welcomed junior actress Seo Hyorim as a daughter-in-law. Seo Hyorim married Kim Sumi's son Jeong Myungho and started a family. The couple, Seo Hyorim and Jeong Myungho, announced Kim Sumi's recent life as a grandmother after they had a healthy daughter.
To mark the first anniversary of their mother's death, Seo Hyorim and Jeong Myungho made a meaningful donation. On the 23rd, they held the "Memorial donation presentation for the late Kim Sumi" at the Good Neighbors hall (Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul). The donation presented that day was prepared from royalty revenue from the book compiling the late woman's diaries, "I Petition: On All Things That Kill Me," and will be provided as scholarships and living expenses to children in crisis in Korea through the "Late Kim Sumi Scholarship Support Project."
Regarding this, Seo Hyorim said, "While publishing my mother's diary as a book, we planned to donate the revenue according to the late woman's wishes. I hope my mother's warm heart, who always cared for children and neighbors in need, will be conveyed to the world."
