The artistry of Korea's leading makeup artists shone on Just Makeup.
On the 24th, Coupang Play original variety show Just Makeup released episode 8, which featured round 4, "New Face," and gave a mission to complete makeup three times with different themes. In the first mission, "high fashion," "Paris golden hands" secured the first advancement to the final fifth round with an innovative LED eyeliner. The second theme, "painting," followed.
The painting task was to complete the makeup artists' works based on artist Ko Sang-woo's piece "Kamadhenu." From casting models to costumes and hair, the makeup artists led the expression and had to finish preparations within 120 minutes.
When the works were finally revealed, the exclamation "Amazing" burst out. It felt as if a gallery had been moved in. Even painter Ko Sang-woo said, "It's so surprising. Actually, interpreting a two-dimensional work three-dimensionally and expressing it is such a difficult mission. I can see traces of how much the participants thought and tried to reinterpret the original work, and it brings back memories," expressing his admiration.
Among them, the top candidates were SonTail, Firstman and Beauty heiress. Firstman chose a male model, unlike the goddess Kamadhenu. He also boasted details that paid attention to bold textures, brush touches and body painting. He said, "In ancient Hindu mythology, there are cases where man and woman are one body. Viewing humans themselves as my canvas beyond gender and the current gender-free trend, the continuity of mythic time slightly fades when you look at oil paintings by touch and reveals the value of masterpieces," using complementary contrast with a golden nose ring and expressing the model's fingertips and legs like body makeup to add emotion.
Another top candidate, Beauty heiress, delivered emotion with makeup so beautiful it could be called an incarnation of the goddess. She explained, "I really wanted to portray a truly beautiful goddess statue. I emphasized mystery through the eye hole and focused on eye makeup to draw you into the eyes. I wanted to give a bindi on the forehead as a point to convey protection, blessing and freshness," appearing to show the pinnacle of K-beauty.
The final top candidate, SonTail, drew painter Ko Sang-woo's exclamation "Oh my God" as soon as the model appeared. It looked as if Kamadhenu had been reinterpreted from the painting and popped out. He said, "The texture of the animal felt so beautiful that I focused on drawing the grain," and "I practiced every single day. I tried both short and long spreading. When I looked at the painting, I thought the hair should start at the bridge of the nose," showing traces of his practice on his own face and adding to the emotion.
Whoever won first place would inspire admiration. Lee Sa-bae said, "Firstman made such an impact appearing with the first model. It seemed like he only touched it three times, but it was perfect and so cool. Beauty heiress had something like the essence of mysterious K-beauty, which was so beautiful. SonTail's name and details were so wonderfully realized, and from model selection to look composition it was all so great," explaining why they were chosen as top candidates. However, the final first-place winner was not revealed. As a result, attention was focused on Just Makeup, which kept viewers glued to the end.<
