'Exclusive World' singer Hyun Jin-woo showed love for his wife On Hee-jung and gratitude toward his mother-in-law.
On the 23rd aired MBN 'Exclusive World', six-children father Hyun Jin-woo appeared. Debuting 26 years ago, singer Hyun Jin-woo, loved for the song released 'My Territory' three years ago. Before becoming a family of six children, the Hyun Jin-woo household had to go through ups and downs.
Hyun Jin-woo said, "The eldest is 23 years old. The youngest, Ju-ho, is 19 years younger. After my wife left, I raised three children alone, worked hard, and after remarrying I had three more children, raising six," he said.
Currently the third child became independent early and at age 20 started a business with 38 million won earned over three years of high school but ultimately closed. Even so, the daughter chose singing as a new dream. Hyun Jin-woo warned of the cold reality of the broadcasting industry, but the daughter said, "The reason I want to be a singer is that when I was a baby my dad had nowhere to leave me so he took me along. I saw my dad sing a lot, and that looked really cool," and she remained steadfast.
Hyun Jin-woo said, "My daughter is a painful spot. During my ex-wife's pregnancy I filed for divorce, and we divorced when she was an infant," expressing his pain. He also said the eldest son was afraid of being abandoned by his new mother, telling his new grandmother, "Grandmother, how could you marry our dad to a mother who was a virgin? When I was young there was nowhere to lean but my dad, so I was afraid. I thought now might be better. I even thought living as we are now might be better."
Singer On Hee-jung became a mother of many children as soon as she married. Still, she thought she would be able to show affection to the children who warmly clung to her. She also loved the three children she gave birth to very much.
But misfortune came suddenly. Because of spasmodic dysphonia, On Hee-jung was in a situation where she could not speak properly. A doctor said, "It can occur in people in their 30s to 50s who experience a lot of stress. There is no medicine. Depending on daily condition the voice may not come out." Hyun Jin-woo said, "As a fellow singer who sings together, spasmodic dysphonia is effectively a death sentence. If you can't even speak, how can you sing," saying his wife's pain felt like his own and sounding deeply sad.
In the end, promising trot singer On Hee-jung stopped her singing career six years ago when she developed spasmodic dysphonia. On Hee-jung said, "I blamed my husband a lot. I thought blaming my husband would make me feel better. I could have pursued the dream I wanted, but I couldn't, so I only looked after the children, and that made me resentful," adding that she is okay now.
The mother-in-law also could not have thought such a son-in-law was acceptable. However, On Hee-jung said, "Now I can't sing. I thought blaming someone would make me feel better. So I went to my mother's temple and cried my heart out, and when I talked about it I felt like I would cry. After doing that for several hours I felt a bit relieved. I was accepted. I'm okay now," she said, crying and laughing.
Also, Hyun Jin-woo took on events whenever he had time to help his family financially. He also went to pick up his mother-in-law at her workplace. Though he seemed blunt at times, there was no reason for the mother-in-law to dislike a son-in-law who went with his wife to her workplace and helped with shopping. Moreover, recognizing Hyun Jin-woo, market people cheered as he sang loudly.
Finding this son-in-law endearing, the mother-in-law showed deep affection without being told, even wiping soy-marinated crab off his clothes, creating a heartwarming scene.
