The magazine W Korea is drawing renewed criticism for remarks about a "breast cancer party."
On the 23rd, YouTuber Sinu (real name Jeon Shin-woo) posted on social media, saying, "When I saw the bizarre term 'breast cancer party,' I honestly thought, 'Is this right?'" and shared a photo.
The released photo contained an invitation that W Korea had earlier distributed in text message form for a recent breast cancer screening awareness event. The message included the phrase "W magazine breast cancer party, which top stars participated in and which drew attention," which provoked criticism.
Regarding this, Sinu added, "I thought, 'Are people really going to this?' but many people attended. Was I the only one who thought it was bizarre?" Sinu's reaction resonated with internet users and drew even more attention.
On the 15th, W Korea held a charity event, "Love Your W 2025," to raise awareness of breast cancer. Marking its 20th anniversary this year, the event attracted attention with the attendance of various celebrities from the entertainment industry and fashion world.
However, the event was criticized as a "social party," which undermined its purpose. At an afterparty, singer Park Jae-beom performed his hit song "Mommae," and the lyrics depicting a woman's chest and the lavish party scenes that made it hard to see breast cancer awareness drew ire. The organizers deleted related posts and issued an apology.
But criticism continues because, despite 20 years of events with celebrity and business leader attendance, the cumulative donations, including this year, amount to only about 1.1 billion won, and the events have made it difficult to find respect for breast cancer patients.
