You Quiz on the Block singer Shin Seung-hoon shared his thoughts on his popularity.
On the 22nd broadcast of the tvN entertainment program You Quiz on the Block (hereinafter "You Quiz"), singer Shin Seung-hoon appeared.
The Daejeon native Shin Seung-hoon said he received as many as about 7,000 fan letters before his debut, surprising viewers. He, who had been a well-known local singer in Daejeon even before his debut, said, "There was a fandom. I counted them all carefully. Looking at the ones I received while doing part-time jobs, it was about 7,000," he said with a laugh.
Then Yoo Jae-suk asked, "I heard you worked singing part-time at a hair salon?" Shin Seung-hoon recalled, "It wasn't for events; the salon owner liked music so he created a stage and used me. When customers were getting perms I sang beside them."
Above all, Shin Seung-hoon said he had never filmed a commercial during his 35 years after debut, surprising everyone. He said, "At that time there were many direct commercials. For example, if it was a 1L drink you would hold it and drink and say 'It's delicious.' That didn't match my image as a sad balladeer."
He added, "As you know, when you ranked No. 1 you would get showered with flower petals and sing sadly like 'I must not love,' but right after that saying 'It's tasty' didn't fit," and he said, "These days there are so many indirect advertisements and many ads now help your image. Now when I see them I regret it. If those ads existed back then I would have done them 100%," he said, drawing laughter.
About appearing on variety shows he said, "I'm a singer, so I thought I should sing first and then appear on variety shows. This time too I went on programs where I could sing. That's why I can come on You Quiz and talk like this."
Shin Seung-hoon also said he travels the country to make hit songs. He said, "Not Paldo Co., but about six regions," and added, "I carried an equipment box and traveled around the country working."
He said he lives with as many as six keyboards beside him, explaining, "If I wake up thinking of music I play the keyboard. If nothing comes out I go back to sleep. If something comes out, I turn on the recorder from then on. I take the recordings to places with nice scenery like Jeju Island or Hongcheon and if it sounds good when I listen again I proceed."
Meanwhile, when asked "If you picture your future self?" Shin Seung-hoon began, "I think it's true even if people say Shin Seung-hoon is past his prime. I have prepared for a descent since long ago. I kept thinking that when I fall at some point I will make a beautiful descent without struggling."
He continued, "From now on I must spread my wings like a crane with the experience I've built so far. You know that thing where you put on big wings like a crane and descend at once. I don't want to struggle to avoid falling. I want to be that kind of crane. Even if people see a descent they will say, 'Wow, that's cool.' I want to finish music as that kind of singer Shin Seung-hoon," he said.
