Taiwanese top star Chen Bai-lin and three other entertainers were arrested on charges of dodging military service.
According to a report by the Liberty Times on the 21st, New Taipei City police have urgently arrested and are investigating four people, including actor Chen Bai-lin (42), Shu Wei, formerly of the group Energy, and Xiao Jie, a member of Lollipop, on charges of avoiding military service. Another actor, Kunda, was also on the list but has not yet been arrested because he is currently fulfilling a schedule in Canada.
Earlier, authorities caught actor Wang Dalu (34) in February on charges of dodging military service along with broker Chen. In May, a large-scale investigation continued, and 28 people, including entertainers and brokers, were sent to trial.
The people arrested this time are also accused of handing large sums of money to Chen and his associates and obtaining false medical certificates. During their statements, they reportedly admitted, "We bought false medical certificates to avoid military service."
Taiwanese society is experiencing strong controversy over "unfairness in military service" as suspicions of military service corruption among entertainers continue. In July, the legislature even proposed an amendment to impose prison sentences of six months or more for dodging military service.
Meanwhile, Chen Bai-lin became known domestically with the 2002 film "Blue Gate Crossing," and he is also a familiar actor to Korean fans for starring alongside Ha Ji-won and Chen Zheng-ming in the 2016 film "Love on the Line."<
