Actor Bae Jung-nam could not hold back his tears at the final farewell with his one and only family in the world, his pet dog "Bell."
The SBS variety show "My Ugly Duckling" aired on the 19th, showing Bae Jung-nam crying inconsolably as he watched Bell's final moments.
In that episode Bae Jung-nam said, "She could have lived a little longer. If she goes like this, I'll feel wronged..." and burst into tears. Because he had continued rehabilitation for 1 year and 7 months and never gave up hope, the sudden farewell was a tremendous shock to him.
Earlier, Bae Jung-nam recalled, "I have lived alone since middle school 3rd year. I started out in the world early delivering newspapers in sixth grade," reflecting on the days he lived alone away from his family's embrace as a child. To him, who calmly said, "Still, I survived," Bell was not just a pet dog but "family" itself.
Recalling his first meeting with Bell, he said, "An acquaintance's dog had puppies, and the smallest and weakest one in the corner caught my eye. Somehow she seemed to resemble my heart," and "from then on Bell became my family." He became a family to Bell, who resembled his lonely childhood, with all his heart.
But happiness did not last long. Bell became unable to walk due to a sudden cervical spinal paralysis, and Bae Jung-nam visited the rehabilitation center every day to nurse her devotedly. That period lasted as long as 1 year and 7 months. His wish that "I hope she could live like this a little longer" was never fulfilled. Bell died of a sudden cardiac arrest at the rehabilitation center.
In particular, his scene of screaming, "Wake up, are you asleep?" broke the hearts of viewers. He finally cried saying, "Dad is sorry, stay a little longer..."
Before taking Bell on her final journey, Bae Jung-nam revisited the rehabilitation center filled with memories and called Bell's name saying, "Stay a little longer." Upon arriving at the funeral home he stroked the now-cold Bell and could not walk properly, and he broke down again in front of Bell's favorite toy. "I'm sorry I couldn't see you through to the end. Dad will live well, thank you, I love you. Don't be in pain and rest well." And finally, he said, "Thank you for coming to me. Dad loves you very much," and broke down in tears.
A short time later, when the cremation began, Bae Jung-nam cried out, "It's hot, what do I do, my baby is hot..." He said he was sadder thinking Bell might be alone. "My baby must be lonely alone, must be scared..." his sobbing moved viewers to tears. After the cremation, Bell remained as a handful of ashes. Holding the urn in his hand, Bae Jung-nam said, "Why did you get so small..." and "Now don't be in pain and rest well. Let's go home." Those words contained his love and longing for his family until the end.
Bell was a female Doberman who had been by Bae Jung-nam's side for about nine years. In 2022 she was diagnosed with total paralysis due to an acute disc condition, but miraculously began walking again under Bae Jung-nam's devoted care. His devoted nursing was revealed on "TV Animal Farm" and moved many viewers.
On the 29th of last month, Bae Jung-nam shared on social media, "My daughter's last film photo development," and released photos of Bell. In the photos Bell is lively, running on the grass and enjoying a leisurely swim in the pool. He left words of longing, "I loved you, rest well."
Viewers who watched the broadcast said, "My chest feels heavy," "You can feel the sincerity," "Bell will be happy in heaven," sharing comfort with tears. Bae Jung-nam left a final farewell, "Bell, thank you. Dad loves you very much." Although the two had a difficult farewell, netizens shared the sorrow and hoped Bell would be happy in a place without pain
