tvN "Typhoon Family" Lee Junho prompted Kim Minha's overwhelming tears with a heart-pounding proposal. Announcing a new start as Lee Junho rose from employee to company president and Kim Minha became a sales manager from an accounting clerk, it raised viewers' heart rates.
The 3rd episode of the tvN weekend drama "Typhoon Family" that aired on Oct. 18 (directed by Lee Najung and Kim Dong-hwi, written by Jang Hyun, planned by Studio Dragon, produced by Imaginus, Studio PIC and Tree Studio) recorded nationwide household average ratings of 7.4% and a peak of 8.4%, and Seoul metropolitan area household average ratings of 7% and a peak of 8%, setting its own highest ratings and ranking first in its time slot across all channels including terrestrial broadcasters. The 20-49 target ratings also recorded a nationwide household average of 2.2% and a peak of 2.5%, ranking first in its time slot including terrestrial broadcasters on both nationwide and metropolitan area standards. In that episode, first came the desperate struggle of Kang Taepung (Lee Junho) and Oh Miseon (Kim Minha) to resolve the Daebang Textile case, on which the company's fate depended. Taepung, who had gone to deliver Italian fabric, sensed something off and blocked the cargo truck. Miseon, just before stamping the contract, excused herself to the restroom and left the office, where she encountered protesters opposing an unexpected closure. It was the moment the scam by Daebang Textile, who intended to grab the goods and run, was exposed.
The real problem came after that. They needed a warehouse to store this large amount of fabric immediately, but in the IMF freeze neither credit nor even trust worked for purchases on credit. Eventually, as Taepung held his ground, physically preventing the truck drivers from unloading at Incheon Port, an empty parking lot appeared before him because there were no jobs. He used the ingenuity of stacking the fabric there as if to "park" it, and guarded it all night against the harsh coastal wind of Incheon.
The one who reached out to Taepung was company president Pyo Park-ho (Kim Sang-ho) of Pyo Sangseon. To Taepung, who knew nothing, the offer to lend a warehouse based solely on one credit was a ray of hope. Although the old warehouse with a broken roof and only torn plastic covering the windows was suspicious, there were no other options, and the desperate Go Majin (Lee Chang-hoon) ultimately stamped the lease contract.
The remaining issue was how to sell the fabric. But that was also not easy. Just when they couldn't find any openings despite contacting every client, Miseon, who carefully checked the contract while looking things up, pointed out a "force majeure clause" that allowed returns. The conditions were strict and the fee was 15%, but there was a chance. Taepung pushed, saying he would accept if the fee was doubled. Cha Suncheok (Kim Jae-hwa) quickly calculated with her excellent abacus skills and found that even after a 30% cut, there would be revenue because the exchange rate had surged due to the IMF fallout. It was a thrilling move by Taepung and Miseon, who found a way even in crisis.
After several sleepless nights of waiting, the "Typhoon Family" team obtained a decision accepting returns by recognizing the IMF as a force majeure, on the condition that quantity and quality remained unchanged. Their joy at cheering was short-lived: that night a torrential rain fell, and united by a single determination to protect the fabric in a leaky warehouse, they pulled an all-nighter repairing the warehouse.
Just when it seemed they had triumphantly escaped the crisis, Pyo Sangseon took out the fabric he had guarded from the warehouse. A special clause hidden on the back of the lease contract allowed the entire warehouse contents to be seized and discarded after 72 hours. Facing Pyo Park-ho's cold attitude of "I saw the money as a businessman. You must read contracts carefully," Taepung finally realized it had been a planned fraud.
Typhoon Family was plunged into sudden insolvency as collection calls flooded in. Eventually, the long-suffering employees packed their things. They were advised to quickly file for closure, give up inheritance, and even consider bankruptcy. Taepung took the closure report in hand and went to the tax office. That night, when it seemed everything was over, a twist occurred. Taepung handed Miseon a business card revised to show her as "president" instead of "staff," saying he had filed an application to change the representative instead of filing for closure. He then dissuaded her from leaving her job and proposed, "Will you become the sales manager of Typhoon Family?"
Earlier, Taepung had realized that Miseon's real dream was not to be an assistant running coffee errands but to be a fine sales manager doing her own work. Miseon's face lit up as she taught Taepung the virtues a sales manager should have. Although they had no staff, no money and nothing to sell in the immediate hard reality, Taepung's eyes shone with firmer resolution and courage than ever. Miseon, too, grew teary and momentarily lost for words at the heart-stirring proposal, and finally nodded. Thus, even amid the IMF's harsh cold, the two rekindled a spark of hope under Seoul's moon. The 4th episode of "Typhoon Family" will air today (Oct. 19) at 9:10 p.m. on tvN.
