Actor Oguri ?? and Han Hyo-joo star in the new Netflix series Romantic Anonymous, which is quickly gaining word-of-mouth in Korea.
As of 5 p.m. on Oct. 18, Romantic Anonymous ranked No. 4 on Netflix Korea's top 10 series. Entering the rankings just two days after release, it has proven early box-office momentum.
Romantic Anonymous depicts the awkward but lovable meeting between Sōsuke, the heir to a confectionery company who has difficulty contacting people because of obsessive cleanliness (Oguri ??), and Hana, a genius chocolatier who fears others' scrutiny (Han Hyo-joo). Their story, in which the two gradually open their hearts through chocolate, evokes warm and delightful empathy.
Produced as an eight-episode series, Romantic Anonymous is a Japanese Netflix original, but the production was handled by the Korean production company Yong Film. Direction was by director Tsukikawa Shō, recognized for the film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas for its sensuous cinematography, and the screenplay was written by Korean writer Kim Ji-hyun.
Since the setting is Japan, most of the cast aside from Han Hyo-joo are Japanese actors, and in the final episode Song Joong-ki makes a special appearance alongside Sakaguchi Kentarō. The series also features a Japanese cover of Park Hye-kyung's song "Confession," reinterpreted and arranged by music director Dalpahan, and LE SSERAFIM's Kim Chae-won performed the show's theme song.
The fact that it is a Korea-Japan co-production involving production teams from Japan and Korea has drawn attention, and domestic netizens' reactions have also poured out positive reviews such as "a healing rom-com. It's warm" and "it has the feel of a Korean drama, a familiar flavor that's fun."
