KARA member Kang Ji-young apologized for the tear controversy that arose 12 years ago on 'Radio Star.'
The MBC program 'Radio Star' (hereafter 'Ras') broadcast on the 15th featured Kang Ha-neul, Kim Young-kwang, Kang Young-seok and Kang Ji-young in an "box-office lupin" special.
On the day, Kang Ji-young spoke about the controversy that occurred when she appeared on 'Radio Star' 12 years earlier. She said, "It's been 12 years since I appeared on 'Ras.' I was 19 at the time. The appearance overlapped with that time," adding, "I couldn't not talk about that time."
Kang Ji-young recalled, "To be honest, back then 'Ras' was a frightening variety show for idols. They asked me to show aegyo and I couldn't, so I cried. But my tears became an issue."
She added, "It was also a transitional period for KARA, and we were sensitive because of contract issues. I have a lot to tell, but my head feels bigger back then," and blamed herself, saying, "At the time I said, 'I can't do things like that.'"
Kang Ji-young also said, "After that I wondered what aegyo really was that made me suffer, so I studied it," and demonstrated prepared aegyo, saying, "Now if someone asks me to show it, I can at least say, 'If you ask me to show it, I can show it.'"
As Kim Gu-ra listened to Kang Ji-young's filmography, which solidified her position as an actress in Japan, he quickly asked, "Don't they make you do aegyo in Japan?" In response, Kang Ji-young began to say, "In Japan they actually don't make you do rude things," and "I'm sorry," then covered her mouth as she spoke without realizing it. Kim Gu-ra said, "Didn't we loosen up?" and complained, "Japan is the origin of rude things," feeling quite hurt, and Kang Ji-young said, "On Japanese variety shows, if MCs like you they hit you," which made Kim Gu-ra feel wronged.
Earlier, during a 2013 'Ras' broadcast, the youngest member Kang Ji-young ended up shedding tears under the MCs' insistence that she show aegyo.
At the time, the MCs mentioned KARA's popularity in Japan. Kim Guk-jin said, "They say one aegyo move from Kang Ji-young could destroy Japan," and Yoon Jong-shin joked further, saying, "I've heard the Japanese archipelago would shake." Kim Gu-ra also urged, "Show us aegyo," pressuring Kang Ji-young. In the end, Kang Ji-young burst into tears, saying, "I really don't have aegyo."
