The 13th broadcast of KBS Joy "Ask Anything" episode 336 featured a 71-year-old "bodybuilder" guest who broke age-related prejudice and shared a story of preparing for a new life as a fitness trainer.
The guest said he started working out only 8 to 9 years ago, surprising everyone. He said he wanted to work as a trainer and earned elderly sports instructor (bodybuilding sector) and exercise prescription certifications, but confessed he was worried that opportunities had not come, perhaps because of his age.
When Lee Sugeun asked, "If it's not rude, can I take a quick look at your body?", the guest did not hesitate, took off his top, and did 30 perfect push-ups, revealing a toned muscular physique. He said, "I usually maintain a body fat percentage of about 10 to 11%, and I manage it more strictly before competitions."
On his management secrets, he explained, "I eat regular food but take additional protein," adding, "As you get older, your ability to digest protein decreases, so you need to eat a bit more to maintain muscle." He added to the surprise by saying he competed in three bodybuilding competitions just in the first half of this year and won first place in all of them.
When Seo Jang-hoon asked, "What prompted you to start exercising?", the guest replied, "I have a family history of diabetes, and I gradually felt something wrong with my body, so I started exercising." He emphasized that his body was self-made by saying, "At first I didn't know how to do it, so I followed blogs and learned from writing, so I learned exercise from text."
Seo Jang-hoon said, "These days many seniors go to gyms. A trainer in their 20s finds it difficult to truly understand the physical condition of someone in their 70s," advising, "On the contrary, the guest is in a good position to provide tailored training for middle-aged and older people." Lee Sugeun also encouraged him, saying, "In an era of longer life expectancy, senior trainers will become a necessary profession."
Seo Jang-hoon urged, "Not hiring someone because of age is an outdated mindset. People like this will be increasingly needed," and added, "If there is a gym that wants to hire the guest, please be sure to contact us."
The guest told the camera, "I want to show my best self as long as I have the strength. If anyone needs me, I will teach sincerely," expressing heartfelt aspirations.
