Actor Jung Sung-il has ended his marriage after agreeing to a divorce nine years after tying the knot.
On the 14th, Jung Sung-il's agency, XYZ Studio, said in an official statement, "Actor Jung Sung-il, after long and careful consideration with his spouse, has decided to bring the marriage to an end," and added, "The divorce was carried out amicably by mutual agreement without fault on either side."
The agency said, "Although the legal relationship has been dissolved, the two support each other on their respective paths and are faithfully involved in raising their child," and asked, "We ask that distorted, speculative reporting be refrained from, as Actor Jung Sung-il will continue to do his best as an actor."
The news of Jung Sung-il's divorce is especially saddening because until just last year he often showed himself as a devoted husband in broadcasts and interviews.
In February 2023 on the tvN show You Quiz on the Block, he revealed the love story with his wife, saying, "After finishing military service I first met her as a friend of a friend. I sent an email to my wife when she went to study in the U.S., and that connection restarted," and confessed, "We maintained our love while living apart for three years."
He also said, "We parted for a while and then reunited after 7 to 8 years, and it turned out my mother and my wife had been pen pals. We met again and married three months later," which surprised MC Yoo Jae-suk and Cho Sae-ho.
In an interview the same year he also said, "At home my wife sometimes calls me 'Ha Do-young,'" and added, "Thank you for sincerely rejoicing with me watching The Glory together," showing a warm conjugal affection.
But in the end the two decided after long deliberation to go their separate ways. Jung Sung-il married in 2016 and has a son.
Meanwhile, Jung Sung-il gained widespread recognition for playing Ha Do-young, the husband of Park Yeon-jin (played by Lim Ji-yeon), in the Netflix series The Glory. He later took his first leading role on the big screen in the film Murderer Report, delivering a powerful acting transformation as a crazed killer. He will continue his work in the Disney+ original series Made in Korea, scheduled for release in the second half of the year.
