A one-armed, self-taught master of ink painting, the "genius painter" Park Dae-sung will make a surprise appearance on Seo Jang-hoon's The Millionaire Next Door.
The episode of EBS' Seo Jang-hoon's The Millionaire Next Door airing at 9:55 p.m. on the 15th (Wed) will fully reveal the arduous and astonishing life story of "a living legend of Korean ink painting," Park Dae-sung, and his 74-year body of work.
Park Dae-sung gained attention from the global art world by holding the first solo exhibition by a Korean painter at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He is counted among the influential Korean painters selected by Forbes and is also known for mainly painting enormous works that are difficult to hang in ordinary spaces. Seo Jang-hoon stood before one of his 12-meter works and said, "I have never seen such a large painting in my life. It feels overwhelming," adding, "I'm a very big person, but I look small in front of this painting," unable to hide his excitement.
Park Dae-sung's life is literally a drama. After a tragic incident at age 4 cost his father and his own left arm, he, through self-study and relentless effort, achieved an unprecedented record of being selected eight consecutive years at the Korea Art Exhibition, the nation's most prestigious art competition. The Millionaire Next Door will lay bare the horrific incident that took his left arm and his father, and the fierce life journey that silenced fierce opposition from the art world for being non-major but overcame all doubt with sheer talent.
Park Dae-sung is also famous as "the artist loved by the late Lee Kun-hee." Chosen as the museum's exclusive No. 1 artist, he was acknowledged for having risen through fierce competition and heard Lee Kun-hee say "I respect you" directly. It is also revealed that Lee Kun-hee provided an extraordinary sponsorship at the time amounting to 20 million won (current value about 72 million won).
