Actor Jeong Seong-il has reached an amicable divorce after nine years of marriage. The breakup adds sorrow to a love story that moved viewers on You Quiz.
On the 14th, his agency XYZ Studio announced Jeong Seong-il's divorce in an official statement. It said, "After long and careful consideration together with his spouse, they decided to end their marriage."
Jeong Seong-il married his former wife in 2016. The two, who met as friends of friends, had broken up after about three years of dating and later reunited by chance and decided to marry. The couple also built a warm family, having one son.
In connection with this, Jeong Seong-il appeared as a guest on the tvN variety show You Quiz on the Block (abbreviated You Quiz) and confessed the love story with his wife. At the time, Jeong Seong-il said, "When this friend (my wife) was in the U.S., she and my mother were pen pals, and they kept in touch even after she returned," expressing surprise, and he added, "My mother was in poor health and came to Seoul for surgery, and my wife accompanied my mother to and from the hospital. So we met again at the hospital," which moved viewers.
However, the marriage ended after nine years. The divorce process was reported to be an amicable agreement. On the morning of the 14th, XYP Studio, Jeong Seong-il's agency, asked OSEN, "Because this decision was made by mutual, amicable agreement rather than fault on either side, we politely request that distorted or speculative reporting be refrained from."
Above all, they emphasized that the two will continue to share parenting as the parents of one child, saying, "Although the legal relationship has been settled, we support each other on our separate paths, and we are doing our best together and carrying out the child's upbringing faithfully." It was added that Jeong Seong-il plans to continue his acting career steadily after the divorce as an actor and as a father.
Jeong Seong-il debuted in 2002 with the film H. He has worked steadily across many films, dramas, plays and musicals. He began to gain recognition with the tvN drama Secret Forest season 2, and he rose to stardom by appearing as Park Yeon-jin (played by Lim Ji-yeon)'s husband Ha Do-young in the Netflix series The Glory, released in 2022 and 2023.
He has continued working without pause. In January, he played the male lead opposite actress Kim Hye-soo in the Disney+ original series Trigger, marking his first leading role in a drama, and in the September-released film Murderer Report he took his first leading screen role and was praised for his portrayal of a deranged killer.
Jeong Seong-il is also set to appear in the new Disney+ original series Made in Korea, which is awaiting release. Made in Korea is a much-anticipated work starring Jung Woo-sung and Hyun Bin that tells the story of Baek Ki-tae, who craves wealth and power in the tumultuous 1970s, and prosecutor Jang Geon-young, who risks everything to stop him, as they face a sweeping, era-defining incident. Having recently finished filming season 1, discussions about season 2 before release have raised expectations.
