Lee Young-ae, Kim Young-kwang and Park Yong-woo fell into the loop of a domino of tragedy.
In the 8th episode of the KBS 2TV weekend miniseries Walking On Thin Ice (directed by Song Hyun-wook, written by Jeon Young-shin), which aired yesterday (12th), the tangled realities of desire surrounding Kang Eun-su (played by Lee Young-ae), Lee Kyung (played by Kim Young-kwang) and Jang Tae-gu (played by Park Yong-woo) were revealed.
In that episode, Eun-su was shocked to learn that Mi-yeon (played by Jo Yeon-hee), the parent who had been blackmailing her, was a customer to whom she had sold drugs. Eun-su went to see the hospitalized Mi-yeon and, instead of keeping quiet about her relationship with Lee Kyung, offered to dispose of the cellphone that contained evidence of the drug transaction. But when Mi-yeon blamed and provoked her, Eun-su felt devastated and turned away.
Meanwhile, Tae-gu's decision to close the investigation despite not finding Phantom's drug bag raised questions. The youngest detective, Kyung-do (played by Kwon Ji-woo), went to visit Phantom boss Gyu-man (played by Won Hyun-joon), who was imprisoned in the detention center, to try to interview him, but Gyu-man did not give a single answer. Convinced that there was a Phantom informant inside the police, Kyung-do continued the investigation.
Tae-gu revealed that he had been the detective who investigated Lee Kyung 10 years ago and saw through his revenge plan. "Gang Hwi-rim (played by Do Sang-woo) still doesn't know who you are, does he?" Tae-gu, who held Lee Kyung's weakness, demanded a large sum and continued the threats. With 10 years of revenge imminent, Lee Kyung began to waver under Tae-gu's pressure.
The story of why Tae-gu became obsessively fixated on money was also revealed. He needed proof of assets to regain custody of his son. Tae-gu demanded a large sum from Lee Kyung to buy back the house he had previously lived in, and Lee Kyung, hiding the identity of the blackmailer, created another crisis by asking Eun-su to come up with 200 million won.
Meanwhile, Eun-su, who was still under economic pressure, was driven to the brink after even being fired from the supermarket. She returned to her discharged husband Do-jin (played by Bae Su-bin) and daughter Su-a (played by Kim Si-a), but she could no longer return to the life she once had.
Lee Kyung, together with his older brother, planned an operation to bring down the Gang Hwi-rim family and prepared the final stage of revenge. But Eun-su, who had been following Lee Kyung, sensed that another transaction had begun, and the trust between the two collapsed completely. Feeling betrayed, Eun-su broke her promise to Lee Kyung, and as a result Lee Kyung was unable to hand over the extortion money to Tae-gu. The successive ruptures pushed the three into an uncontrollable ruin, hinting that the domino of tragedy had begun.
At the end of the broadcast, the desires of the three characters collided head-on. When a distraught Tae-gu aimed a gun at Lee Kyung, Eun-su, who appeared on the rooftop, realized that Tae-gu was the blackmailer and the mastermind behind all the incidents. It was further revealed that Su-a had been implicated as a drug courier, increasing the tension, and Phantom member Jun-hyun (played by Son Bo-seung), who had been unconscious, finally opened his eyes, signaling a new variable.
Viewers who watched the broadcast responded enthusiastically, saying, "Eun-su is truly an unpredictable person. Completely crazy," "Creepy how every character is tangled in it," "The writer's writing is on another level," "No, Su-a," "This is heading straight for catastrophe," "Is Tae-gu the final villain?" "What on earth is Lee Kyung's story. Today was so heartbreaking," and "The acting of Lee Young-ae, Kim Young-kwang and Park Yong-woo is terrifying."
In this way, Walking On Thin Ice depicted with overwhelming tension how the desires of the three, which began to protect their families, ultimately drove them to mutual destruction. As the relationship among the three entered an irreparable phase, attention is focused on what ending the twisted fates of Eun-su, Lee Kyung and Tae-gu will lead to.
