Actor Kim Woo-bin acknowledged the mixed reactions to Genie, Make A Wish while expressing a strong attachment to the work.
Kim Woo-bin conducted an interview on the morning of the 13th at a café in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. At that meeting he talked about the Netflix series Genie, Make A Wish and his recent activities.
Genie, Make A Wish is a stress-free fantasy romantic comedy drama about a career-interrupted lamp spirit Genie (played by Kim Woo-bin), who awakens after about a thousand years and meets the emotionally deficient human Ga-young (played by Suzy) and their three wishes. Kim Woo-bin passionately played the title role and male lead "Genie."
Kim Woo-bin opened by saying, "I was happy to have the time to introduce a work I spent a long time on last year," and laughed, "I was grateful we could release it during a long holiday and breathe together."
Because it reunites writer Kim Eun-sook and Kim Woo-bin and brings together Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, Genie, Make A Wish has generated a great deal of buzz. But reactions to the work are divided. On that, Kim Woo-bin said, "I haven't been able to look at every response, but I checked some and heard some through Netflix."
He continued, "Every work is bound to have mixed reactions. Our work contains so many stories and allows for many different thoughts, so it's natural that there are many opinions. Whatever the reaction may be, people watched our drama, and I am grateful that they sincerely engaged with what they watched."
Rather, Kim Woo-bin said calmly, "Domestically, it's ranked No. 1 on Netflix. Overseas, people seemed to expect even higher results. I'm sorry we couldn't meet all expectations, but many people are watching, and because Netflix released all 13 episodes at once, more people seem to be watching over time. We're thankful that viewers are responding so we can communicate."
Above all, regarding the varied opinions about the happy ending, he added, "I didn't think the happy ending was sudden. I liked that Ga-young and Genie didn't part sadly and that it concluded warmly. I also liked that, true to the writer's style, it ended by playfully tossing a message up to the heavens."
