Director Park Chan-wook unleashed warmth and a sense of humor through "Insaengi Yeonghwa".
The 27th episode of the KBS 1TV movie talk show "Insaengi Yeonghwa," which aired on the night of the 12th, featured director Park Chan-wook, who is receiving attention from filmmakers around the world, and he appeared, revealing a delightful, unexpected charm that completely overturned his image as a "heavy and difficult master." On that broadcast, director Park Chan-wook immediately shattered the preconception that he would be as serious and difficult as his films and showed a more humorous side than anyone else.
Director Park described his new film "No Other Choice" as "the story of a person who knows they're not right but cannot give up desire," adding, "what interests me are the ironies of human beings: things unfolding differently than intended, things that start as kindness turning into wrongdoing." He went on to say, "I hope the audience feels Mansu (Lee Byung-hun)'s dilemma along with him," and added, "it's fun how, even knowing it's wrongful, you end up rooting for the protagonist and experience that emotional tug-of-war."
Regarding deliberately spacing the title of "No Other Choice" incorrectly, he added, "People often say 'eojjeol suga eopda' in daily life without realizing it, and I wanted to express that phrase as if it were a single word."
Above all, what made his new film "No Other Choice" special was its "laughter." Film critic Liner said, "I had a preconception that Park Chan-wook's films would be heavy and philosophical, but this film was a perfect black comedy," and Geoui Eopda said it was "Park Chan-wook-style comedy that twists extreme situations to create laughter."
Park Chan-wook, Liner, and Geoui Eopda each revealed the memorable scenes they picked from "No Other Choice." Director Park cited the couple fight scene between Lee Byung-hun and Son Ye-jin as the funniest scene. Liner chose Beom-mo (played by Lee Sung-min), who struggles and symbolizes the "person who cannot help it," while Geoui Eopda selected the bonsai scene in which Mansu (played by Lee Byung-hun) twists his own branch and bends the direction of his life as the best scene.
About the scene that used Cho Yong-pil's "Gochujamjari" during the intense brawl that drew the most attention, director Park said, "I have been a fan of Cho Yong-pil since high school," and "I've wanted someday to use an entire song completely, and I finally met that opportunity in this film," explaining his choice of song.
Director Park especially expressed such trust in Lee Byung-hun that he said, "I couldn't imagine another actor," and he did not spare praise for Son Ye-jin, saying, "I was amazed that she could express emotion so precisely with just intonation and her eyes."
At the end of the broadcast, director Park Chan-wook added, "No Other Choice is a very easy film, a very funny film," and expressed the hope that "people simply enjoy the film itself." <
