Movie actor and singer Jeon Yeong-rok said he is hungry for the affection he didn't receive in childhood.
On the 11th episode of MBN's Sokpulishow Dongchimi (hereinafter "Dongchimi"), No Sa-yeon, Jeon Yeong-rok, Cho Hye-ryeon and Hong Jin-hee appeared. Jeon Yeong-rok, who spanned the 1970s, made headlines for partnering with numerous female singers.
Jeon Yeong-rok said, "Since the 1970s I've done duets with female singers. Back then people said we 'matched mouths.' And when doing duets you look at the other singer's mouth. You have to watch the length of breath and things like that, so because you look at the mouth a lot, you 'match mouths' a lot," he said. He reacted cynically to articles that repeatedly circulated rumors of his death after he was involved in countless scandals.
No Sa-yeon focused on Jeon Yeong-rok's heyday popularity, saying, "Didn't you 'match mouths' with Kim Hee-ae, Hye Eun-yi, Lee Eun-ha, Yang Soo-kyung, Lee Ji-yeon, Jung Soo-ra and Kim Hye-rim?" Kim Tae-hoon noted, "Jeon Yeong-rok wasn't just a popular singer. For example, when the song 'Write Love With a Pencil' became a hit, middle and high school students used pencils instead of ballpoint pens," explaining that Jeon Yeong-rok was more than merely popular.
Jeon Yeong-rok said, "The person I most wanted to 'match mouths' with was No Sa-yeon," expressing regret that he never got to duet with her.
Jeon Yeong-rok is the second generation of a three-generation entertainment industry family. His father was movie actor Hwang Hae and his mother was singer Baek Seol-hee. Also, Jeon Yeong-rok's daughter is T-ara's Jeon Bo-ram. However, he said he was from a 'dirt spoon' background.
Jeon Yeong-rok said, "I saw scary things. I even saw red tags," and said, "If my father didn't have work, my mother brought in money, and if neither had work there was nothing we could do," describing how, despite his parents' dazzling fame, they experienced poverty.
Jeon Yeong-rok said, "It wasn't long after we experienced the Korean War," and "I worked part time as a DJ since high school. If your hair grew long you were caught in moral policing," and added, "I lived like that and never lived as a 'gold spoon.'" He said he was a 'gold spoon' in terms of talent but not in other ways. Jeon Yeong-rok said, "I couldn't even look my father in the eye. I couldn't sit at the same table. Strangely entertainers treat others better than their own families. The consideration is extreme," and spoke about his father, who was instead close to Lee Hong-ryeol.
Meanwhile, Cho Hye-ryeon said she broke off their friendship because she was so disappointed that she was returning alone on an evening when wind and rain were blowing after going to help Hong Jin-hee practice lines at Hong's request. On the way back that day she said, "I thought Hong Jin-hee was too self-centered. I deleted her number."
Later, Hong Jin-hee, wanting to meet Cho Hye-ryeon who was not responding, directly asked a variety show to arrange a meeting with Cho Hye-ryeon, and Cho Hye-ryeon said she agreed to appear because of Hong Jin-hee's sincerity and that they are now on good terms. Cho Hye-ryeon said, "A few years later a variety show contacted me. Hong Jin-hee said she wanted to get in touch with me and wanted eye contact, so they contacted me to arrange it. So when we saw each other's eyes she said she was hurt from a few years ago," saying she still maintains a special friendship with Hong Jin-hee.
