KBS2's 'Immortal Songs' Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung achieved an all-kill by winning five consecutive times to claim the trophy for the "Artist Park Jung-hyun" episode. Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung recreated Park Jung-hyun's "In a Dream" as a male duet version, drawing admiration.
The 726th episode of 'Immortal Songs,' which aired on the 11th (Sat) (directed by Park Hyung-geun, Kim Hyung-seok, Choi Seung-beom / hereafter 'Immortal Songs'), was the "Artist Park Jung-hyun" episode, featuring six acts in order: Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung, ONEWE (ONEWE), HYNN (Park Hye-won), Forte na, Solji & Jung Joon-il, and Lee Mu-jin, each bringing new colors to Park Jung-hyun's classic songs.
Before the competition, a youthful image of Park Jung-hyun from 29 years ago appeared on screen, stirring nostalgia and memories. Park Jung-hyun delivered a special stage of "My Day," capturing her original spirit. Park Jung-hyun's undeniable soul and stage presence drew admiration from the judging panel and dominated the atmosphere.
Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung, who had hoped for the sixth performance slot, unexpectedly went on first. Choosing "In a Dream," they exchanged delicate emotions as if meeting each other in a dream. As their voices blended and the emotion swelled, the choir's backing filled the stage richly, leaving a deep afterglow. Park Jung-hyun commented on the performance, "I thought it could be interpreted this way. Thank you for showing me that new side."
ONEWE (ONEWE) took the second stage with "A Wound Deeper Than Love." Member Yonghun told the judging panel, "I will heal you," and soothed the audience with an acoustic-sentimental performance. What followed was a crescendoing rock arrangement that erupted and sent shivers down the spine. The original's subtlety and the band's bold energy intersected exquisitely. Park Jung-hyun praised ONEWE's interpretation, saying, "I was surprised by the interpretive skill. Can you sing it like this?" Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung earned 397 points, defeating ONEWE and winning the round.
Next, HYNN (Park Hye-won) took the stage and sang "I Will Write You a Letter." HYNN maintained Park Jung-hyun's distinctive sensibility while reinterpreting the song with her own strong vocal color. The resonant, traditional ballad arrangement enriched the song's narrative. It was a stage that played the straight game. Park Jung-hyun, who has a special bond with HYNN, offered praise and applause. Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung beat HYNN and extended their winning streak to two while keeping their place in the winner's seat.
Forte na was named for the fourth stage. The two tenors who chose "P.S. I Love You" filled the stage with overwhelming power and explosive high notes. They arranged the song with a proclamation concept rather than a whisper of love. The weighty vocals that crossed the stage moved the audience. Park Jung-hyun marveled, "It was powerful and masculine. I felt that music has no limits." Still, Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung pressed on relentlessly, earning more votes than Forte na and winning again to achieve a three-peat.
The duet created by 'Immortal Songs,' Solji & Jung Joon-il, took the next baton and performed "Mia." Jung Joon-il's pleading voice combined with Solji's explosive singing to create a distinctive color. Each time their voices and emotions intersected, it drew admiration. The choir's backing made the stage even more majestic and increased its completeness. Park Jung-hyun smiled and said, "There were delicate, well-researched details. It felt like a letter sent to me." The two were strong contenders, but Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung secured a fourth consecutive win and kept their place in the winner's seat.
Lee Mu-jin took the final stage. Choosing "At the Beauty Salon," Lee Mu-jin put down his guitar and grabbed the mic. Excluding flashy techniques, he fully displayed his qualities as a vocalist through his own voice and sensibility. Lee Mu-jin interpreted the song with the melancholy sensitivity of a boy, showcasing a different charm. Park Jung-hyun smiled about Lee Mu-jin, saying, "I was impressed that he showed a side I'd never seen before."
The day's ultimate victory went to Sandul & Im Gyu-hyung. Having performed first, they celebrated clinching the final trophy while achieving a remarkable five consecutive wins, an "all-kill record."
