In Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung, the Sure-Win Wonderdox take on the international stage.
Tonight (12th) at 9:10 p.m., episode 3 of MBC variety show Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung airs, in which director Kim Yeon-kyung's Sure-Win Wonderdox face Japan's strongest high school team, Shujitsu High School, opening the curtain on a "real-life Haikyuu."
Shujitsu High School, the opponent of the Sure-Win Wonderdox, is a prestigious among the prestigious schools, having won the Haruko (spring high school volleyball tournament), a tournament equivalent to the national sports festival, five times and the Inter-High (national sports festival) three times. Players lacking skill are mercilessly released, and only those who survive the competition can take the court, making it the top high school volleyball program.
The Sure-Win Wonderdox arrive at Takamatsu Airport in Japan to face Shujitsu High School. Director Kim Yeon-kyung and the players express the pressure of the Korea-Japan match while showing a desperate will not to lose. Kim director's remark, "We must win," conveys the sense of responsibility the Wonderdox feel.
With local Japanese staff, broadcast trucks and a cheering squad solely for Shujitsu High School all mobilized, the Wonderdox's sense of burden grows. At that moment, the Shujitsu players enter the gym, and the Wonderdox watch them warily at their energetic practice and powerful attacks. Even though it is Shujitsu's home ground, there is no stepping back; captain Pyo Seung-ju firmly steels her resolve, saying "Losing is out of the question."
Having experienced Korea-Japan matches several times as a national team member, Kim Yeon-kyung faces a Korea-Japan match again after four years, this time as a director. Director Kim Yeon-kyung rallies the team, saying, "This is a match we absolutely cannot lose. Let's stay focused until the end." Attention is focused on what result the Korea-Japan match for pride and Kim director's leadership will produce.
Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung placed Kim Yeon-kyung at No. 1 in TV-OTT non-drama guest buzz in the first week of October. It also ranked sixth in overall TV-OTT non-drama buzz, showing more than double the buzz compared with the previous week and continuing a sharp upward trend. Rookie Director Kim Yeon-kyung became the center of explosive interest as the story of "volleyball emperor" Kim Yeon-kyung's first challenge as a director and the growth saga of the Sure-Win Wonderdox from underdogs to wonders drew strong empathy from viewers.<
