Actor Jung So-min showcased a striking presence as Would You Merry Me, heralding the return of the rom-com goddess.
On Nov. 10 (Fri) and Nov. 11 (Sat), in episodes 1 and 2 of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama Would You Merry Me (written by Lee Hana / directed by Song Hyun-wook, Hwang In-hyuk), Jung So-min gave a passionate performance as Yoo Meri, a livelihood-driven designer who, to secure the grand prize of a luxury newlywed home, asks a man with the same name as her ex-fiancé to be her fake husband.
Would You Merry Me is a drama that depicts a sweet-and-savage 90-day fake newlywed period between two men and women competing to secure the prize of a luxury newlywed home.
In episode 1, Meri drew attention with a cheerful debut, appearing for a presentation wearing a red crab headpiece and gloves. While giving her all in the presentation with a sales smile, she delivered a refreshing retort to rude government officials—"We report on the level of partner we work with"—bringing satisfying relief. Even with brief lines, the character's personality came through fully, and Jung So-min's crisp acting shone instantly.
Meri learned of her fiancé-to-be's affair with her ex-fiancé Kim Woo-joo (played by Seo Beom-jun) and was shocked. To make matters worse, after the broken engagement it was revealed that the newlywed home they had contracted was a rental fraud, pushing her to the brink in an instant. Drunk and wandering the street, Meri mistook Kim Woo-joo (played by Choi Woo-shik), whom she encountered by chance, for her ex-fiancé, showing an odd yet lovable side, and Jung So-min delivered the essence of drunk acting with sly expressions and glances.
Meanwhile, although Meri won the grand prize of a luxury newlywed home, the condition that she needed a husband to keep the home reversed the atmosphere. Meri asked Kim Woo-joo, who has the same name as her ex-fiancé, "Would you be my husband?" proposing that he be her fake husband. In that scene, Jung So-min heightened credibility by carefully portraying Meri's complex emotions in a desperate situation.
In episode 2, Woo-joo, who had flatly rejected Meri's proposal, became entangled with her again through work. As a designer who stakes her livelihood on her work, Meri used the contract terms as bait to persuade Woo-joo and finally reached an agreement for a fake husband contract, breathing a sigh of relief. But their sham marriage came with a three-month cohabitation condition, and the added setup that a watcher lives next door kept viewers on edge.
In this way, Jung So-min portrayed Yoo Meri in three dimensions, combining a lovely exterior with realistic bitterness, drawing viewers' empathy and immersion. With lively slice-of-life acting, buoyant energy, and the ability to vary emotional tones by situation, she firmly commanded the show in just episodes 1 and 2, proving an irreplaceable presence.
