'Would You Merry Me' Seo Beom-jun shared his thoughts on playing a man who has an affair.
On the afternoon of the 10th at the SBS building in Mokdong, Yangcheon District, Seoul, an unveiling press conference was held for SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Would You Merry Me.' Director Song Hyun-wook and actors Choi Woo-shik, Jung So-min, Bae Na-ra, Shin Seul-gi and Seo Beom-jun attended the press conference.
'Would You Merry Me' is a 90-day fake newlywed period of two men and women trying to win a luxury newlywed home prize with sweet but fierce moments.
In the drama Seo Beom-jun plays Kim Woo-joo, Mary (Jung So-min)'s ex-fiancé. He promised to marry Mary after five years of dating, but during the wedding preparations he has an affair with a colleague he joined the company with and ultimately the engagement is called off.
Seo Beom-jun said, "When I first met the director, I read the script and I hated (ex)Woo-joo, but the director said he didn't want him to look hateful. He said he hoped viewers wouldn't change the channel. He often asked how to make (ex)Woo-joo look lovable and how later viewers could embrace him, so I acted while worrying about that."
He explained, "Actually, I can't say exactly because each of (ex)Woo-joo's actions is a spoiler, but later the staff told me after acting that he seemed to have become 'pretty trash.' He's trash but packaged pretty trash. They said he didn't look too hateful, so I was relieved."
When asked if there was a real person he referenced, Seo Beom-jun joked, "I hope there's no one like that." He added, "Every time I received the script I saw this guy's lines and actions and had many 'oh my' moments. I can't tell you everything because it would spoil things, but you can meet him tonight," he previewed.
When asked why he chose the project, Seo Beom-jun said, "I enjoyed 'The Beauty Inside' and 'Another Miss Oh,' so I really wanted to meet the director. Previously while doing 'The Fiery Priest' I said I definitely wanted to do romance next, and when I received the script I read it with great interest. It was different from the romance I imagined, but reading it sparked a sense of challenge. I wondered how I could deliver these lines and actions."
He continued, "There were many lines and actions that were not easier when seen on the page. So in the first meeting with the director, as we discussed it, I became even more interested. How can I make him look lovable, like pretty trash? It seemed like a challenge for me too. I'm curious and eager to see how viewers will react. Please don't hate him too much, don't change the channel, and watch Jeon Woo-joo until the end — then he might be remembered as pretty trash," he urged.
Meanwhile, 'Would You Merry Me' premieres today (the 10th) at 9:50 p.m.
