"Cho Yong-pil, forever this moment - the record of that day" Cho Yong-pil shared his plans as a singer.
The special documentary "Cho Yong-pil, forever this moment - the record of that day," which aired on KBS 2TV on the 8th, revealed behind-the-scenes of Cho Yong-pil's solo concert and showed his passion for music.
That day Cho Yong-pil explained the reason he decided to appear on broadcasts for the first time in 28 years. He said, "I worry that if I get older and my voice doesn't come out, people in the audience will say, 'That person should stop,' " and added, "I have never thought about wanting to give up. I just think music is everything to me."
Above all, he added, "(My last KBS appearance) was in 1997. If I don't appear now, there may not be many chances to meet you all. Also, my voice will get worse going forward, won't it? So I thought, 'I have to do it quickly,' so I decided. To be honest."
Thus, Cho Yong-pil filled a KBS solo stage on Sept. 6, after 28 years since the 1997 "Big Show," performing for 150 minutes with his own songs and no guests.
Seven days before the performance, Cho Yong-pil visited the rehearsal room in the KBS main building and began practicing as if in a live timeline matching the performance. About this, band The Great Birth bassist Lee Tae-yoon marveled, "I get very nervous when we practice, because we sit to rehearse while hyung always stands. I've never seen a vocalist who practices as if it were the real thing besides my hyung."
Guitarist Choi Hee-sun also said, "Band music has a huge harmonic content. For a vocal to survive and break through, they need tremendous skill in every respect. I don't think there are many people in the world at that age who can do 30 songs," adding, "Even now only very high songs have been lowered by about half a key compared to before. This should be seen as having crossed into a certain realm."
During a rehearsal, there was an emergency where his voice failed. Persistent ear ringing made it hard to concentrate. Sitting down for the first time, he lamented, "My ear was fine yesterday, but I had a cold and took medicine, which caused dry mouth and made it worse."
After a short while, Cho Yong-pil wet his dry mouth with a sip of water and returned to practice. Bassist Lee Tae-yoon laughed, "I think the performance will go very well. We practiced a lot. We practiced songs we've played for 32 years ten times. There won't be a vocalist and band that practice this much."
A day before the performance, Cho Yong-pil gave even rehearsals his full sincerity. He has a half-century career with thousands of stage experiences, but he said he practiced and practiced again. A staff member said, "He rehearses every three days, and after the first day of practice he goes to the office and practices again the next day. He said he rehearses singing every day without the band. He really matches the pitch perfectly."
Meanwhile, Cho Yong-pil expressed affection for his fans, saying, "I'm grateful. That you still call me and remember me until now and like my music moves me and gives me great gratitude and a huge sense of fulfillment."
On the day of the performance, Cho Yong-pil went on stage after pledging, "Before a performance, all I feel is that I must do well. So I can show all the music we've done on stage." He then moved fans by saying, "The title of today's performance is 'forever this moment.' Like that phrase, I hope this moment together with you will be remembered for a long time. Thank you."
Afterwards, impressions from Kim Jong-seo, Paul Kim, Cho Hyun-a, and Sunwoo Jung-a were also shared. Kim Jong-seo said, "I think Cho Yong-pil hyung's contribution to getting me where I am today is enormous. He constantly gives me guidance. He gave me guidance today as well."
Paul Kim said, "I witnessed the moment when I realized there is a singer who can make people of various ages happy. That is the role of music," and Cho Hyun-a expressed respect, saying, "I thought Cho Yong-pil senior's stage is almost the correct answer for a performance where you can fully enjoy it without distinguishing between the band and the frontman. I want to say thank you for becoming our destination."
Sunwoo Jung-a said, "My lifelong goal is to make music until the end of my life. Seeing senior doing that, he seems to become the ideal for musicians."
Meanwhile, Cho Yong-pil said, "I want to keep doing it. Until 80, or maybe after that or before, I don't know," while showing continued passion for music by adding, "How happy would I be if I died singing. It is my dream."
