Comedian Jeong Se-hyeop has died. He was 41. News that his mother cared for him for five years after his leukemia diagnosis has emerged, and the sad news coming one year after his return to comedy is heartbreaking.
On the 7th, KBS2's Gag Concert expressed condolences on its official account, saying, "We extend our deep condolences on the tragic news of the late comedian Jeong Se-hyeop. We respectfully pray for the deceased's soul," conveying its sympathy.
Earlier, Jeong Se-hyeop was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015 and continued a difficult battle with the disease. Despite a despairing prognosis of a 10% survival rate, he never gave up hope until the end. In 2022, appearing on the YouTube channel PuHaha TV's "Midnight Confessional," he recalled the time, saying, "I had a health checkup and was hospitalized immediately. I wasn't even sick, but they said the survival rate was 10%. The doctor told me, 'You are almost in a situation to die,'" he revealed.
He went on, "I was scared but couldn't tell anyone. I didn't even know the cause of the leukemia," and "My mother nursed me for almost five years. She had to boil the dishes every time we ate and sterilize the spoons. I was cut off from society, and my mother also lived a life cut off from the world," he confessed. He added, "Seeing that, I resolved to overcome it and live well. I tried to treat my mother and the people around me well."
Jeong Se-hyeop also said, "My siblings' bone marrow didn't match, so we looked both domestically and internationally but couldn't find a donor. Then miraculously two people in China matched, and one of them donated and performed the transplant," and "I have now been declared fully recovered," he said, bringing relief to everyone.
After overcoming the illness and returning to the Gag Concert stage last year, the sudden sad news delivered one year after his comeback has brought even greater shock and sorrow. In particular, his confession that his mother stayed by his side and cared for him for five years has resurfaced, leaving many people deeply moved.
Netizens left messages of condolence mourning the deceased, saying, "He brought laughter like a miracle; it's so tragic," "How much pain must his mother feel," and "I will remember Jeong Se-hyeop's courage in never giving up."
Meanwhile, Jeong Se-hyeop passed away the night of the 6th, and the wake has been set up at Hwaseong Hambak Mountain Funeral Hall. The funeral procession will be at 7:40 a.m. on the 9th, and the burial site is Hambak Mountain Memorial Park.
Jeong Se-hyeop debuted in 2008 as a comedian in SBS's 10th public recruiting class and made his name known through shows such as Finding Laughter and Gag Tonight. In particular, on Finding People Who Find Laughter, he performed in Chow Chow makeup and left the catchphrase "Chaochao~," earning much love.
