"Haengnim, what are you doing?" Haha, Joo Woo-jae and Lee Yi-kyung spent a night united as they opened up their hearts.
The MBC Chuseok special variety show Haengnim, What Are You Doing? which aired on the 7th was a spinoff of Hangout with Yoo? and followed Haha, Joo Woo-jae and Lee Yi-kyung's carefree 1-night, 2-day road trip. The three men were hopelessly mismatched in travel, food and sleeping styles, but their care for one another connected perfectly. While bickering they shared honest conversations and built friendship, and the three men's "genuine brother chemistry" delivered laughter and emotion.
In episode 1, the three men were shown starting their first day of travel in Jinan, North Jeolla Province. At the meeting point, Haha and Lee Yi-kyung waited for Joo Woo-jae, who was styling himself, and grew mischievous. Haha called Yoo Jae-seok to tattle on Joo Woo-jae, and Yoo Jae-seok encouraged them, saying, "He's turned into a golden-child style these days. He's the youngest, so coax him gently."
Haha, who planned the trip, first suggested climbing Maisan and then having a delicious lunch. Joo Woo-jae, the "40-year-old golden child" who dislikes hiking, grumbled, "Who does this on a trip?" yet reluctantly followed Haha and began to climb the mountain in a fury. Seeing Joo Woo-jae act like a contrarian, Haha said it reminded him of his son Dream and found it cute, and Joo Woo-jae's dazed appearance as he hiked from Haha's provocation provoked laughter.
The three men wandered until they found a stream and soaked their feet for a brief healing moment. Lee Yi-kyung carried Joo Woo-jae, who had no slippers and had to walk barefoot, creating a rare affectionate two-shot. Joo Woo-jae, conscious of the rumor that he weighed 50kg, asked, "Do you think I'm not being carried?" and Lee Yi-kyung replied, "It doesn't seem like you lifted a man," prompting laughter.
From the start of the trip, Lee Yi-kyung expressed his wish to sleep in the same bed as his hyungs, but met fierce opposition from Haha and Joo Woo-jae. A free-throw basketball contest for sleeping arrangements followed. Even Haha and Joo Woo-jae, who had been fighting all day, became one in that moment. With Haha's success, the three sharing one bed was canceled, and Joo Woo-jae sighed in relief, saying, "Three in one bed is not happening."
As the night deepened, the three men's conversation grew more serious. Lee Yi-kyung talked about Joo Woo-jae, who seems indifferent and chic but is warm and attentive, and thanked him, saying, "90% of my clothes are clothes he gave me." Joo Woo-jae at first thought Lee Yi-kyung's bold energy didn't fit him, but confessed, "As time went by, I don't think anyone else slowly seeped in like this guy. At some point I realized I liked Yi-kyung. I found myself leaning on Yi-kyung on set."
The three men became one as they expressed their affection for Hangout with Yoo?. Haha said, "When I think of Hangout with Yoo? it pains my heart. At first I thought it was right for Jae-seok hyung to do it alone, and I got scolded a lot for saying that to him. At that time Jae-seok hyung said, 'I was also so lonely and struggling, and you guys came in and ran it well,'" he revealed.
Joo Woo-jae said he wanted to lessen Jae-seok hyung's burden and be one with the hyungs in doing the show, but because things didn't go as he wanted he increasingly became self-conscious, sharing his worries. Lee Yi-kyung expressed gratitude toward Yoo Jae-seok, who always watches over him. Reading Yoo Jae-seok's affectionate text messages, he said emotionally, "He contacted me right after the live broadcast ended. On the day I left for Japan after filming he sent a message: 'Yi-kyung, you worked hard, have a good trip. You just have to do your best. Always thankful,'" which moved him.
Moved by the mood, Joo Woo-jae declared, "This might happen once a year, if at all," and "I won't be here tomorrow morning," downing makgeolli. Haha enjoyed Joo Woo-jae's sudden display of "tetoryeok" and said, "Why is he like this?" and Lee Yi-kyung reacted, "I've never seen Woo-jae hyung like this." The three men grew closer as they opened their hearts, leaving a deep aftertaste and raising curiosity and expectation about what will happen on day two of the trip.
The preview for episode 2 showed a 180-degree different trip by the hyungs and focused attention by showing Haha wiping away tears. MBC's Haengnim, What Are You Doing? episode 2 will air Thursday, the 9th, at 8:10 p.m.
